Lady Beetle Research Paper

People find ladybugs attractive for their bright red appearance and black spots, while farmers find them helpful for their crops. These small creatures are often mistaken for bugs, but they are actually beetles. This is why they’re called lady beetles. There are about 5,000 different species of ladybugs around the world, and each of them is unique. The lady beetle is most active between spring and fall. During that time, they will be almost everywhere. They live in grasslands, forests, cities, suburb, and along rivers. They have been found in places they weren’t found before. Male Bean Beetle (Callosobruchus maculatus) Reproductive Success Abstract: Callosobruchus maculatus is a bean beetle that lays eggs on the surface of beans, the larvae hatch out of the eggs and immediately burrow into the bean to devour all its nutrients and mature into an adult. The study of the male’s reproductive success when given access to water versus no access could lead scientists down a path of slowing the growth of the bean beetle population. The study was performed in lab 201 September 16th, groups separated a dish of watered males with un-watered females and a group of un-watered males and females, the control, to test if the availability of water in the adult phase would affect the male’s success of offspring. The class collected no data that suggested water availability made a significant difference in the success of the male’s reproduction; the average number of eggs counted in the watered dishes were 56.8 and in the dry dishes it was 31.…

That is why it is very common to find one under a rock that has not been moved in a while. They are identified as detritivores, which consume dead organisms such as dead animals and dead plants through the process of decomposition (Wagler 2017). Decomposing soil is very acidic, and due their diet consisting of dead organisms, it is assumed that they favor acidic environments. In this lab the number of pill bugs that chose the acidic environment as opposed to the basic environment were examined. Similar studies tested the use of salicylic acid (SA) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on lettuce plants and their effects of detering pill bugs (Tierranegra-garcía et al, 2011).…

I chose to investigate the environmental impact of gypsy moths because I have personally had experience cleaning up after these pests in northern Ohio and I know that they are becoming an issue in other parts of Ohio as well. I was able to witness some of the damage they have done while removing defoliated trees in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Gypsy moths are a non-native, invasive species that, over the past decade, have been coming into the state from Pennsylvania and Michigan. The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis and while a caterpillar it has the ability to feed on over three hundred species of trees and shrubs and cause serious damage and defoliation. The moth’s preference for oak, make the oak tree particularly at risk because the caterpillars favor it and a tree can typically only withstand two years of defoliation before the damage is permanent or results in the death of the tree.…
