(Concept of Chivalry) Chivalry is a moral code that was used by knights many, many, many years ago. It was a thane or a retainer or for a lack of better words, a warrior code. There are two ways that chivalry can be displayed. One is through the individual. It requires a balanced soul which consists of honesty, integrity, courage, sacrifice, generosity, and humility. The second way is collective or communal. In the code of chivalry used by knights, women are highly elevated above the men. The men are supposed to be married to the church or to the kingdom. Oliver criticizes him by stating “Companion, it is your doing. I will tell you what makes a vassal good: it is judgement, it is never madness; restraint is worth more than the raw nerve of a fool. Frenchmen are dead because of your wildness.” Roland replies by not saying a word back and just going on with what he is doing. This takes strength, mentally and physically. Mentally to not say anything and retort, and physical because it would be hard to not punch someone for stating something like that and putting all of the blame on the one person which would be Roland in this specific case. Lord Roland and Lord Oliver must not argue or else there will be sever issues on the battlefield and within the people. The Song of Roland is basically a song of deeds and is the national epic of France. It is a mix of fiction with fact and it retells the legends of King Charlemagne. Roland also displays bravery which is an important element in chivalry. He displays bravery because he and his army are trapped in a mountain pass in Pyrenees and they are greatly outnumbered by the Saracens. Oliver goes out to scout for the enemy and things begin to go south. When Oliver returns he begins to yell and scream at Roland in regards to his sister. It had to have hurt Roland’s feelings when Oliver was saying the words that he was saying, but it was constructive criticism in a way that could be taken very well if it was given to the wrong person and made into something that will motivate them to do better and excel. This was the age of warfare and Roland was a very brave man. He was always fighting in battles and he was always doing something to protect everyone else. He was a very fine example of what is meant to follow the code of chivalry.
