Lacy's Intellectual Disability

For this assignment, I am doing the Case Study 1, which focuses on a 7 year old girl, Lacy, who has an Intellectual disability in the first grade. Lacy’s teacher, Mr. L, states that Lacy is not able to complete assignments at school because she is not paying attention when the directions are being given. She will also frequently draw and colour during class when her classmates are doing the assigned tasks. When Lacy was asked why she colours and draws instead of working, she said she does not like to do the other activities because they are hard. Mr. L reports that Lacy’s preferred activities include colouring, drawing, computer time and story time. Lacy enjoys the time when stories are being read out loud; she will listen and comment on them. The off-task behaviour do not occur during this time. The behaviour will happen most of the time when Mr. L is explaining independent work or when Lacy’s classmates are doing work on their own.
Certain peers or adults in the room do not influence Lacy’s off-task behaviour. Yet, she said the other kids do not like her and she does not want to do activities with them.

For this reason, Lacy has to display friendliness or approachableness so that she can collaborate with her classmates. In order for this to happen, I would have to teach a strategy that will help strengthen her relationship with them. I am going to do this by demonstrating her the proper way of greeting. Most likely she would have to say “hi” or “hello” to them with a smile. Also, if she wants to work with her classmate(s) in an activity, I would teach her an appropriate way of asking them. Perhaps, she can say “I would like to do this activity with you. Can we do it
