One of the biggest problems that affects millions of people in the United States is the lack of universal healthcare. The United States is the only first world country that does not offer universal healthcare to its citizens. We must take action to fill that deficit. The idea of universal health care seems so radical to our politicians that the general public must suffer for their mistakes. Every day that passes a new family files bankruptcy because of medical bills and a child dies from not being able to receive critical care. It seems as if the healthcare industry gets richer while the overall population suffers from increased rates of obesity, heart disease, and lung cancer. Universal healthcare is important to me because, without insurance, my family would not have been able to afford various medical expenses throughout the years. I suffered from depression last year from which I was able to receive critical care paid for through my insurance. While I was in a mental hospital I met many wonderful girls who were hours away from home because they couldn’t afford treatment nearby. As they were discharged, the medicine they needed was as much as $400. The families had no choice but to pay this monthly price or otherwise risk the welfare of their children. Not only has health care been there for me when I need it but for my younger brother as well. For a year my younger brother woke up screaming in pain. After various tests, it was concluded that he was going to need surgery for his recurring ear infections. The insurance covered it in full which gave my family a peace of mind. Others might not be so lucky and have to pay thousands of dollars. Seeing the vast reasons why healthcare is important magnifies the problem of lack of universal healthcare.
