Lack Of Sleep How often does athletes get the adequate amount of sleep? Studies shown that 30-36 hours of sleep deprivation can result in a loss of performance (Grantham). According to the National Sleep Foundation sleep deprivation has also been seen to decrease production of glycogen and carbohydrates that are stored for energy use during physical activity. Even though some people feel the less sleep athletes get and the more hours they spend putting in practicing their athletic performance will become greater, the lack of sleep can cause athletes to function slower, weaken the immune system, and be put at a higher risk of getting injured. I believe that the lack of sleep athletes get affect athletic performance. Lack of sleep can cause mental functioning to decrease nearly as rapidly as physical performance. “ Sloppiness, most people notice that when they’re sleepy they are not performing at the top of their game” (Friedman). Sleep deprivation impacts us physically, which can negatively affect our coordination, agility, your mood and energy (Physical Performance and Sleep). Minimal levels of sleep loss result in decrease in the amount of effort you put into your athletic performance (Grantham). It not only causes you to function slower but it also causes you to react slower to things also. According to Shona sleep extension and napping can be effective means of enhancing performance in athletes. This is why it is adequate for athletes to get (7.5hours or more) sleep to perform at the best of your ability each day (Physically Performance and Sleep). The graph below shows the different age groups and the adequate hours of sleep they get. The average amount of sleep that is required for you to go throughout your day without feeling drowsy is seven hours or more, according to the graph not many get this amount of
