“In the United States, 31% or 133 billion pounds of the 430 billion pounds of the available food supply at the retail and consumer levels in 2010 went uneaten. The estimated value of this food loss was $161.6 billion using retail prices. For the first time, ERS estimated the calories associated with food loss: 141 trillion in 2010, or 1,249 calories per capita per day.”(EndHunger) That is insane the amount we’re wasting each year. The amount we waste could possibly feed millions of starving children in developing countries. “Even 15 percent of the food being discarded would be enough to feed 25 million people at a time when one in every six Americans does not always have enough to eat.”(STROM) I think the more privileged and developed countries should be more considerate and aware of this situation.The biggest reason that food is being wasted is because people are throwing foods away. …show more content…
Sometimes people will buy food and won’t touch it at all, that's why we’re wasting so much. Now to the solution, “How do we fix this?” A very interesting idea I found was restaurant's recycling food. A restaurant named Bon Appétit is taking food scraps and using it for composting. “Bon Appétit, the restaurant and food services company, has created a new position, waste specialist, to help cut down its food waste.”(STROM) This alone won’t stop food waste but it’s a start.
