In 2002, the shortage of nurses was around 125,000 or 6% of the full time RN. Current estimates are that by 2020, the nursing shortage will be closing to 800,000 RN’s. Currently, we are seeing 21,000 fewer students in nursing school then we did in 1995.…

Nurses in the United States currently comprise the largest number of health care professionals (ANA, 2016). The last nursing shortage occurred in the early 2000s. The recession of 2007 brought the profession out of shortage due to many part time and stay at home moms returning to full time employment. The Nursing shortage is expected to come back due to nurses returning to pre-recession work levels, retirements, insufficient people going into nursing, and fewer nurses specializing in certain areas (Snavely, 2016).…
Introduction The immigration population in America is ever-growing, and so is the diversity or our nation. With the new arrival of immigrants brings about a wide abundance of disparities for this population- ranging from occupational, financial, to health care. As members of the Nursing Program at the University of Louisville, we are amongst the group who should work towards eliminating these disparities particularly in healthcare. As nurses, it is our duty to educate and be an advocate to our patients.…
“Strategies to Reverse the Nursing Shortage” provides solutions to reverse the nursing shortage by addressing problems like the aging nursing population, the importance of nurse educators, and the declining number of nursing students. Like the previous articles mentioned, the nursing population is aging and more skilled nurses are leaving the healthcare system. There needs to be new policies in place to reduce the number of experienced nurses from leaving or have a rehiring process. Instead of allowing older nurses to completely disconnect themselves from nursing, part-time employment is an option (Strategies to Reverse the Nursing Shortage, 2001). Older nurses can also serve as mentors and take up a teaching role in order to prepare new nurses.…
I would consider myself an underrepresented minority in the field of nursing because I am a Black male. First off, in 2011, 9 percent of all nurses were men, while 91 percent were women. In 2013 nurses from minority backgrounds represented 19 percent of the registered nurse workforce. African Americans made up only 6 percent of the minority population. In 2014-2015 nursing students from minority backgrounds made up 30.1 percent of students in entry-level baccalaureate programs, 31.9 percent of master’s students, and 29.7 percent of students in research-focused doctoral programs.…

Despite that fact one interviewee stated “we always need more nurses”. (Amber Web, RN, NS, Personal Interview, March,23,2016) I feel this contradicts because there is not much support in this kind of field, in which will, motivate the underachieved. I agree with Nursing Education…

The Effects of Nursing Shortages in our Society The shortage of nurses worldwide is a major issue that affects our society, and will continue to become an even bigger issue in the future if nothing is done to find a solution. According to Robert Rosseter (2014), author of Nursing Shortage, the number of available registered nursing jobs in the United States is extreme: “The RN workforce is expected to grow from 2.71 million to 3.24 million in 2022, an increase of 526,800… [and] also projects the need for 525,000 replacement nurses in the workforce bringing the total number of job openings for nurses due to growth and replacements to 1.05 million by 2022” (Nursing Shortage, para. 2). While analyzing these statistics, one can see that the shortage…
Cultural Diversity and Its Influence on Nursing Practice Cultural Diversity is a key component to quality patient centered care. The Nurse needs to be aware of their own cultural attitudes. It is also very import that as nurses we understand the patient’s cultural preferences and needs. Cultural competence is becoming more important because of the increase in cultural diversity in our country. In the United States 13% of our population was not born in this country and another 8-10million are living here without documentation.…
Even if black male nurses have qualifications and degrees, they are still considered less competent. Findings show that the job made even more challenging for black male nurses, so they cannot get promotion. In response of all these discriminatory treatments, black male nurses have to wear white uniforms to show their job status. Moreover, black male nurses have to keep a distance from female coworkers so they won’t be misjudged. On the other hand, white male nurses deny doing the feminine part of the nursing job to get promotion.…
A nurse shortage is defined in relation to the current unmet demands for present nurses and student nurses. Nursing shortages are becoming a concern worldwide. The causes for this shortage are complex, some of which include, an aging workforce, a population of the baby boomers, new better paying jobs in technology, and job distress. The demand for nurses is directly related to the demand for healthcare services. Our aging population is rapidly increasing, thus causing a demand for healthcare services and nurses.…
In 1998, a nursing shortage began due to the confluence of several factors that were, at the time, unknown. The lack of nurses is becoming apparent and putting out negative effects for the world to see through the registered nurses habits in caring for these patients. Hospital administrators suggested higher wages and increased training for nurses; however, efforts to provide these did not end the shortage. The controversy here is higher wages cannot make up for being intensely overworked, causing severe exhaustion and job dissatisfaction…but some people are still trying to increase wages without reducing workload. Because many aspects of society are affected, the nursing shortage has become a concern among hospital administrators.…
“You’ve likely heard about the “nursing shortage” for years now, and perhaps you think it’s been resolved. However, registered nurses are near the top of the list when it comes to employment growth “ (Nursing Shortage). A good thing about nursing is if someone gets in a job and they decide they do not like the job they have that there are so many different job that they can go into. People can decide if they want to work with babies or elderly people. There are millions of jobs that a nurse can do.…
