The author’s syntax moves from a sense of Paret’s unpredictable defeat to an order of events creating a suspense and finally, to an extended complex sentence . In the beginning, the paragraph starts off with declarative sentences as it describes the protagonist in this case, Benny Paret. As Benny Paret’s information is being distributed to the audience, the use of periodic sentence, slowly transitions to the main idea and to fully make sense of the overall passage. Rather than announcing right away the death of Paret the author does not announce it until the very end to allow the audience to keep reading. In the middle the syntax begins it order of events creating a suspense through the combination of several short and long sentences.…

The Crucible, a historical fiction play written by Arthur Miller, focusses on the horrific Salem Witch Trials that ran rampage in 1692. The disastrous events which took place shattered the Puritan society, and destroyed many of the religious values that the Puritans hold so dear. Even though this play was written in 1953, Arthur Miller includes many stylistic devices to give the play an authentic feel. Miller uses a plethora of these devices in order to make readers feel as if they are actually in the 1690s, however, the most prominent devices are syntax and diction, and biblical allusions. The syntax and diction that Arthur Miller uses in The Crucible tricks readers into thinking that they are actually reading a piece from the 1600s.…
The biological approach relates to sleep as it’s theories involve bodily processes and functions. The biological approach explores events that occur within the body. Sleep is important as our bodies need sleep to function as certain functions are restored within the body. The biological approach states that sleep occurs in a circadian rhythm known as the sleep-wake cycle occurs over a 24-hour period. The hypothalamus is located in the brain and contains the superchiasmatic nucleus (SCN) which controls the circadian rhythm.…
Procrastination affects many people, I even procrastinated writing this paper. The ways that it affects us can be different, sometimes procrastination doesn’t affect us too much, but other time it can cause major health risks such as, stress or depression. Recognizing this, Tim Urban presented a Ted Talk on procrastination and the dangers it can have. In his Ted Talk “Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator”, Urban used pathos with a minimal amount of logos and ethos to express his message to his to the audience. Urban also used pictures to support his use of pathos.…

In the book Walden, Thoreau contrasts many pairs of opposites, which the most important contrast is that between Christianity and Hinduism. The second behaviour is sleep procrastination, which involves the individual delaying bedtime in favour of other activities such as reading, schoolwork, art or gaming. This can also occur when faced with an upcoming or past stressful event, for example, the outcome of the 2016 US election. In these circumstances, although the events cannot be controlled, the individual can stay up until dawn, although most commonly, its before 3 AM. Despite fatigue during the day, the behaviour persists. The only instances the behaviour ceases is in times of illness or if less than 4 daily hours of sleep are obtained for consecutive days.…
According to Bruce Trigger (2003; 92), “city-states were relatively small polities, each consisting of an urban core surrounded by farmland containing smaller units of settlement. In territorial states a ruler governed a larger region through a multileveled hierarchy of provincial and local administrators in a corresponding hierarchy of administrative centers.” A civilization is far larger than a city state and territorial state in both land and population, it also has a large surplus of food, stratified social ranks, and coerced tribute (otherwise known as taxes). There are differing positions about whether city states or territorial states came first.…
1.Definition of Ambiguity Ambiguity, as is defines in the Webster’s Third International Dictionary, is”the condition of admitting of two or more meanings, of being understood in more than one way, or of referring to two of more things at the same time.” In ordinary books on linguistics, the term is generally defined roughly as a linguistic phenomenon that a word, phrase or clause can have more than one possible interpretation. It is thus an attribute of any idea or statement whose intended meaning cannot be definitively resolved according to a rule or process with a finite number of steps. In ambiguity, specific and distinct interpretations are permitted (although some may not be immediately obvious), whereas with information that is vague,…

These syntactic rules not only help speakers of that language consistently generate grammatical sentences in their mind, they also allow them to identify those that are ungrammatical. However, not every speaker is consciously aware of all the syntactic rules he or she follows.…
