Health and nutrition, particularly my own, is something I have taken special interest in lately as I’ve come to realize I’m rapidly approaching the second half of my life and want it to be as good as, or even better than, the first half. If I were to be asked eight weeks ago if I was a healthy person, my answer would be a resounding, “Yes;” my regular physicals and blood work confirming my response. And while I still believe that to be true, what an eye opener the Diet Analysis project was, as far as understanding my actual nutritional intake in comparison to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of nutrients recommended for optimal health and well-being. The following paragraphs not only detail the Diet Analysis PLUS program used for this project,…
Individuals do not realize the amount of food they consume on an average day until keeping a daily food journal. The two-day food journal gave me keen insight into the number of calories and nutrients I was providing my body. After evaluating my results, I concluded there are several things I could do in the future to improve my daily eating habits to benefit my overall health. Throughout the two days, my nutritional caloric intake revealed how different types of foods have a different effect on my body.…
The term Freshman 15 is slang that is used to refer to the weight gain in students who enter colleges and universities. Studies have proven that a student is likely to gain approximately 15 pounds in weight within the first year that they join the institution. Weight gain is a problem that widely affects a significant proportion of the society owing to the diseases that may result because of unusual weight gain. Gaining weight may lead to one increasing his or her body mass index leading to one being overweight or suffering cardiac diseases. This paper is a proposal to the solutions that colleges and college students may put in place to solve the problems that result from freshman 15.…
Freshmen students entering their first year of college are faced with stress and change, and possible changes in body weight and body image. A common and highly publicized notion among college students is the high risk of gaining the dreaded “Freshman 15” which refers to the potential for excessive weight gain during freshman year. Although some individuals believe that the “Freshman Fifteen” is a farce, studies show that students indeed gain weight as they enter their first year away from home. The idea of weight change has filled college campuses for decades and still floods the minds of freshmen believers. It is so widespread that Daphne Oz, author of the recently released book, “The Dorm Room Diet,” specifically targets college students…
Administration and faculty, Indian Land has now come to be very prosperous for restaurants and food establishments, allowing a variety of food selections, consumers are presented a diverse selection of food to consume and enjoy. Indian Land High School does offer students different choices of food selections from day to day; however, these selections are prepared in unhealthy methods and are not as nutritious as a meal from a restaurant. Qualified restaurants prepare healthy food for consumers to eat. Off campus lunches offer students something to look forward to in their eventful week of school. Off campus lunches should be allowed to students at least once a week.…
Discussion The study addresses two questions: How do college students obtain the meals they are eating? Why are they consuming this food? According to my results, I found that food being accessible, cheap, and a healthy option factors heavily into the way a college student plans their diet. College students are aware that they should be eating healthy, however they have little time and money that cannot be wasted towards food, so they look for meals that help them save on both, all while still being a somewhat healthy choice.…
Over the course of this class, I have learned quite a bit about what it takes to actually eat healthy and take care of my body. Coming into this class, I thought that I had already figured out most of what I had needed to know. Very quickly, I started to realize that there is a whole lot more to eating healthy than I had thought. Being as health conscious as I am, I immediately found the class very interesting, as it is one of the only classes that I have ever taken that can actually be applied to life on the daily. That is why I found the “My Diet Analysis” project to be extremely interesting.…
This evidence demonstrates that nutritional food labels is underutilized by consumers and is an important source of nutritional information to see how much sugar and fat is being consumed. “Consumers with prior knowledge are more likely to use label information effectively, that is, focus on salient information, understand information, and make healthful decisions based on this REFRENCE.” Educating adolescence on nutrition and teaching them how to utilize the nutrition labels will teach them and courage them to make better dietary decisions, because they will be aware of how much sugar and fat etc. is being consumed in their meals and…
Richie Harkenrider 12/5/16 Diet Analysis Paper Part 2 Introduction: Nutrition is extremely important in living a healthy lifestyle. Keeping an eye on your personal daily nutrition values and intake is vital to an effective diet. How many times do you satisfy your hunger by grabbing a bag of chips rather than a banana or quench your thirst by drinking pop instead of water? Eating healthy and getting enough exercise on a daily basis can be difficult. By keeping a food diary and physical activity diary for five days I am able to see what my trends and bad habits are as well at what I did well nutritionally. Some of these trends and habits can lead to health risks later in my life, so to reduce these risks there are plans and recommendations for eating a balanced meal and staying healthy physically. I consider myself a healthy eater and I like to check the food labels on items for amounts of carbohydrates, fats, protein, sodium, and even the first few ingredients.…
A person has a choice to decide healthy or unhealthy and how much they consume in each sitting. As Verduin, Agarwal, and Waltman state, “Consumers need clarity and reliable nutrition information to make responsible dietary decisions.” This statement helps people realize that they are not educated enough to even know the difference in what is healthy and what is harmful to their…
During the growing and developing stages of adolescents, students need a healthy and well balanced diet to help them grow into healthy adults. Adolescents spend more time at school than at home and two of their main meals, breakfast and lunch, are provided there if they choose to eat at school. That’s almost up to fifty percent of their caloric intake (Gibson and Swartz). By reducing and or eliminating junk food from…
Change for Healthier Choices For years, providing students healthy eating options is a common problem within many college campus food services. With something as important as student’s health and wellbeing, college food services across the nation need to make a larger effort to solve their lack of nutritious meal options. Like many other colleges, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology’s convenience store, Miner Shack, does not provide students with healthy snacks or meal choices. The Miner Shack is an on campus store that sells food after dining hours.…
Everyone has time to be healthy Freshman 15 is an expression used to describe an arbitrary amount of weight students put on in their first year of post secondary studies, usually due to unhealthy eating and poor exercise habits. Students say they struggle finding a balance between work, leisure, and maintaining healthy habits, leading to a lack of exercise, and poor nutrition. These complaints are clearly caused by a lack of intrinsic motivation and a growing status quo of complacency, rather than actual time constraints. Despite the vast number of home workouts that one can complete in under ten minutes, students will still excuse themselves from any form of physical activity, in favour of inactive alternatives. The problem is further pushed…
Nutrition An unknown author once stated, “The greatest wealth is Health.” When coming into this class I didn’t know much about health and the importance of physical exercise. The influences I have when I make my personal food choices are eating what I want but counting calories to make sure I’m not over the daily calorie intake. I try to make wise food choices but sometimes I get distracted when my friends or boyfriend want to go out to eat and I end up falling into a whole menu full of fat foods.…
