The Negative Effects Of Gmos

Although there are given benefits of using GMOs in crop production, such as longer lasting produce, easier farming practices, and more appealing crops there are also harmful effects through the consumption of these products. The negative effects we see are the ways in which GMOs can impact the health of an individual, which is evident here. This is why it is important to establish the requirement of GMO label on all food, so that we can start moving towards the right direction and hopefully get people to realize that GMOs are not necessarily good for you. Without GMO labels on foods that contain them, customers are uninformed of the food that they are purchasing and consuming. The FDA considers the food using GMOs to be GRAS, generally regarded as safe. This might come as a shock to most, with 93% of people favoring the labeling restrictions. With that being said, however majority of that percentage has very low knowledge of what GMOs actually impose on their health, but it might be enough that the FDA is labeling all foods to be “generally” safe to ingest. With the GRAS policy in place, agencies such as the USDA and FDA are able to put restrictions on labels, but do not seek these changes due to the policies already in place. We then look to organizations such as Right To Know to act on eventually requiring GMO labels on all foods, and try to spread knowledge on the issue as well as trying to advocate for a change in the way we see our food. The ultimate goal of getting GMO labels on all foods is exactly what this organization is advocating for, making significant in moving our argument forward. Companies such as Giant, who have a tie to the biggest GMO distributor, have a big effect on the bills that pass regarding the Right To Know advocacies. To put this into perspective, if they allowed the bill to pass, they would be forced to put GMO labels on all the food they sell, and there sales would plummet drastically. This seems to be an issue we can 't quite get passed, yet 64 countries around the world already have these laws in place for all or the majority of the food they sell to their citizens. Beyond the bigger corporations, however there are companies, such as Apple&Eve who label their products to be GMO free even though there aren’t set restrictions on labeling the presence of GMOS.
