Labeling Theory Of Success Or Failure In School

Deviance is pretty much the “labor” that society successfully applied to an individual. “The consequence is that we become more interested in the process by which deviants are defined by the rest of the society, than in the nature of the deviant act itself.” (Sociology 149) I found that the text of the contributions of labeling theory to be the gist of success or failure in schools. However, I feel that self-fulfilling prophecy can be defined as any expectation, positive or negative, a situation or event that can affect an individual behavior in such a manner that it would cause that expectation to be fulfilled or not. In schooling we have the teacher’s expectation toward student’s expectations and how a teacher is responsible to influence the educational growth of a child. Since we all have different views on what should be an acceptable behavior, I would say that we all act deviant somehow, even in minuscule ways such as trying a grape at the supermarket before buying them, or filling up a strawberry box because it weight less that it says on the label, which some people would view as stealing. There are a lot of sociological theories about deviance. I think that individuals become deviant based on their ability to achieve their goals and needs in life.
