The book refers to these as the effects of being labeled that can be negative which are separating the person and the label, environmental bias, and my addition is complete invisibility (Drew, Egan, Hardman, 2014, p.6-7). Within the child life human development program, we are taught to address children within hospitals by their name not their condition. This occurs constantly among the health community. I feel doctors should have a class totally devoted to bed side manners because the common mistake is to refer to patients by their condition, disability, or handicap instead of knowing their name. However, due to my experience as a certified nurse assistant I have a little understanding why this occurs because it is the doctors’ way of remain unemotionally attached. Even so, this is something that needs to be changed. The second is the environment bias that is influenced based on people’s experiences and opinions. A good example was said within the book that people instantly think that if a person is in a mental institution that they are insane, dangerous, and unwelcome to the community because of those other reasons. This is influenced by the many movies throughout history that display people within a mental institution as murders influenced by insanity. and in the end of the video they take of these labels and revel the labels that they have given themselves such as creative, smart, athletic, etc. I think the message of this video shows what this chapter was explaining that there are certain labels given within the community that can affect a person positively or negatively. I took my label and changed it to thoughtful, creative, and unique. This gave me a more positive perspective of my disability that helped me be proud of who I am. If someone asked me if I would like to be normal I would tell them no because there is no such thing as normal and I like who I am and the community that I
