Before beginning he experiment the physical appearance of all the chemicals being used needs to be written down. To begin the experiment 3 test tubes must be acquired; a boiling tube, large test tube and a small test tube. The large test tube must be completely dried with a paper towel and labeled R for Reactants. After that is done a piece of weighing paper should be placed on a balance and tared. After make sure the balance is correctly tared, a spatula must be used to collect 2 grams of granular Zinc on the weighing paper. The zinc is then added to the boiling tube. Using a different spatula weigh out 2 grams of iodine crystals and also add the to the boiling tube. After having done that the boiling tube should be placed in a large beaker. Collect another boiling tube and a large test tube, which should be labeled P for product and C for colored solution respectively. Then place a one boiling chip in the boiling tube.
Before beginning this part of the experiment the steps should be read thoroughly. You begin by using a10mL graduated cylinder to measure out 5 mL of acidified water add it to the R boiling tube

Observe the results and if the color of the mix is purple-light pink the test is positive. The test for iodide requires 5 drops of .1 M of AgNO3 to be added to your mix and if a yellow precipitate forms the test is positive. The triiodide test requires a visual inspection and if the colors are orange, brown or red the test is positive. The zinc ion test requires the solids to be dissolved in 2-3 mL of water (if a precipitate forms .17 M acetic acid should be added) and then to add 1 magnesium turning. If a fine black solid is deposited on the surface the test is positive. Finally the test for zinc metal requires 3 drops of 3 M HCl solution to be added to the test tube and if hydrogen gas is produced the test is
