Lab: Potassium Aluminum Sulfade

The purpose of this lab was to synthesize the compound KAl(SO4)2●12H2O(S) also known as Potassium Aluminum Sulfate Dodecahydrate but simply known as alum. Aluminum foil was dissolved in Potassium Hydroxide that was stirred on a hotplate stirrer which was then mixed with Sulfuric acid under constant stirring and within a fume hood. It was then placed in an ice bath and filtered and left to dry. After the alum crystals were synthesized and dried they had to be analyzed to determine their percent yield, melting point, and percent error. The alum crystals were formed from this reaction: 2Al(S) + 2KOH(aq) + 4H2SO4(aq) + 22H2O(l) → 2KAl(SO4)2●12H2O(S) + 2H2(g). The analysis of the synthesized alum crystals showed a percent yield of 10.67%. There
