In Allegra Goodman’s short story “La Vita Nuova”, we are presented with a character that possess several traits. Amanda, the story’s protagonist undergoes change as she develops as a character. Amanda went from being an emotionally-dead victim of a hurtful breakup to someone who can feel again. In the beginning of the story, Amanda is perceived as a depressed character. She got dumped by her fiancé shortly before their wedding. Her fiancé would say that she was a “very dark person" or was "like living with a dark cloud” and “always sad.” In the winter she decided to cut her hair, her "beautiful curls", making herself boyish, less attractive.
