La Vita Nuova By Allegra Goodman

In the story, “La Vita Nuova” by Allegra Goodman, several concepts of Starkey’s checklist were used. First, the story started with the most opportune moment. For example, the introduction of the story started with Amanda walking in the Colonial cemetery. As a result, the conflict and tension were present in the situation. Then, a few lines later a flashback of her ex-fiancé’s comment about her was mentioned, “you are living with a dark cloud, Amanda’s fiancé had told her when he left.” This hints the sadness of the main character and make it the central conflict of the story. However, the full conflict was not fully mentioned in the beginning to entertain and motivate the readers to continue reading.
Second, the story ended at the best possible

In the article written by Carolyn Raphaely, she tells the story of Sabelo Ngani and how he spent the last eleven years of his life doing time in prison for a crime that he did not commit. In 2007 Sabelo Ngani was found guilty for the gang-rape of 24-year-old Mpho Suping despite the lack of solid evidence. The security guard responsible for calling the authorities that night made a statement, but it was never reviewed in the case, nor was he asked to testify. Three of the accused, not including Ngani, were caught in the act and they all stated that Sabelo Ngani was not present at the rape. Even though DNA tests from the incident were inconclusive, Sabelo Ngani was found guilty.…

The title of my poem is, "How Healthily Their Feet Upon the Floor" by Edna St. Vincent Millay. I believe that the significance of this title is about the childhood life. The word "healthily" means to be in good health, and it is referring to the feet on the floor, which I believe are dancing or running; the activities of a child which are forms of exercise. That is seen as good health; however, by only looking at the title a reader would not know that the poet is giving an expiation of childhood lives, memories, and experience.…

People go about their day conforming to whatever it is they encounter, not even regarding their morals or cultural heritage. The question I ask myself is, “Why would someone stand by and not express who they really are when their culture is being ridiculed?” People with different cultures should share their culture with others so that other people may learn about different things and to accept different types of people. It is the other peoples job to listen and accept differences in heritage with open arms and realize that were all stuck on this earth together and we have to find a way to make it work and to make the best of our situation. Being different is something that not all people embrace or even acknowledge in their everyday lives.…

Female Ugliness: In the Southern Writings of Eudora Welty and Flannery O’Connor Eudora Welty and Flannery O’Connor characterize women with ugliness by rebelling against the Southern ideology of beautiful women. In this essay, I will concentrate on those texts which recognize and embody the female ugliness – Welty’s Petrified Man and Lily Daw and the Three Ladies, and O’Connor’s Good Country People and A Good Man is Hard to Find. The ugly female characters demonstrated in these fictions challenge the stiff, gendered expectations of women by their appearance, sexuality, and strength particularly when women are in the public eye.…

Craig’s Essay Analysis In Men’s Men and Women’s Women by Steve Crag, he argues about the purpose of using gendered images and portrayals in advertising. Advertisers look to target audience such as men and women who are at home watching daytime televisions on weekdays or those who are at home on the weekend watching sports. Prime time (evening) is a good time to reach women who are outside of home and also the men who fall in this category. These gendered programs and portrayals are constructed for the desires of the target audience to watch.…

On Spirituality Mitch and Morrie do not discuss much about the concept of spirituality itself as they do not appreciate the word “spiritual” (Albom, 1997, p. 84). Spirituality considers the human yearn, “to seek meaning and purpose in life, inner peace and acceptance, forgiveness and harmony, hope, beauty” (Berman, et al., 2016, p. 954). Though Morrie culturally Jewish, he is all inclusive when it comes to religion. Though, Morrie discusses God testing Job in the Bible, the Buddhist concept of the bird on the shoulder predicting death and the dangers of money and power becoming a god to you, he doesn’t talk in depth about the conventional spirituality despite the subject matter of Mitch’s visits. In his last interview with Ted Koppel, Morrie admits to his struggles with spirituality.…

Kloss asserts that Diego Velázquez was “one of the greatest painters in a European century”. Perhaps the most famous painting by Velazquez is his Maids of Honor, Las Meninas, painted about 1656. This piece is in four sections each section looks at one of the four elements of nature- earth, water, air and fire. The piece depicts how each of these entities and energies inform Afro-Brazilian Folkloric dances.
