Have you ever worked on a group project before? If so, you know how important it is to have a strong team. Joshua Davis, author of La Vida Robot, and Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs, certainly think so. They both believe that in order to have a strong team, one must use their unique skills to contribute to their team’s success. In La Vida Robot, Davis describes a high school robotics team who use their combined talents to create a robot. This group consisted of four members: Lorenzo Santillan, Oscar Vazquez, Cristian Arcega, and Luis Aranda. Lorenzo was the “mechanic man” who “was ready to build something of his own” (Davis 189). Wozniak would invent a machine, while Jobs figured a way to sell it. For example, Wozniak created the Apple I, “a small stand-alone computer on a desktop…[that had] a keyboard, screen, and computer all in one integrated personal package,” during his time at the Homebrew Computer Club (Isaacson 212). At first, Wozniak gave away copies of the Apple I for free. However, Jobs convinced him to “hold them in the air and sell a few” (Isaacson 215). Because “Jobs was awed by Wozniak’s engineering wizardry, and Wozniak was awed by Jobs’s business drive,” there teamwork eventually resulted in one of the world’s biggest companies: Apple (Isaacson 217). In conclusion, Davis and Isaacson think that the best team is composed of people who use their different abilities to create something one-of-a-kind. Imagine if the team only had member that specialized in one area and did not collaborate well. They would not be able to achieve their goal! But if they had members who each specialized in a different task, and cooperated together, they would be able to create something fantastic.
