La piedra de Guatape (The Rock of Guatape)

I remember the very moment I saw it; I was getting out of the car, and as soon as I looked up, I could not blink for at least a minute, the stateliness of the massive black rock in the middle of the lake was astonishing. It was not even close to the rock I saw on pictures before, it was far better, and clearly bigger. The things nature can make are out of this world, I thought.

In the summer of 2015, I took an unexpected trip with my family to Guatape; we wanted to see something different, a place or a thing that we had never seen before, and La Piedra de Guatape in my country Colombia seemed like the perfect idea. La Piedra de Guatape is a stone surrounded by water and small islands in a region

Once situated right in front of it, the size of the rock becomes intimidating and there is nothing similar to compare it with. According to the guide of the trip, the rock appeared thousands of years ago by a movement of the plate tectonics forcing the rock to break the ground appearing on the surface. The black rock is at least two hundred meters high, curved shaped and with a crack in the middle where the staircase is located. The Crossed stairs resemble the corset of a dress or shoe laces as one of the staircases is to go up and the other one is to go …show more content…
During the tedious and tiring climbing, people were breathing with their mouth leaving no space for a smile or a kind look to the person next to them, but their mood seemed to change when they reached the top; they are laughing and smiling to the cameras for a perfect picture with the breath-taking landscape. Situated meters down the top, the small, green and beautiful islands are surrounded by a wide greenish and calm lake making it look like surreal. The rock looks like a meteorite that fell from the sky in the middle of the lake breaking the land around it creating the small islands. The view is outstanding and inspiring, but not only that; the atmosphere around me is picturesque and warm, full of handicrafts and local goods for the tourists, and it is impossible to hide the excitement of the moment.
Nature never fails to thrill me; it offers the most amazing things in life and this is a prove of it. La Piedra de Guatape in Antioquia, Colombia is one of my favourite places in the world as it had a great impact on me; the feeling of being literally on top of the world is something that I have not felt since then and the peace and astonish that I felt when looking at the landscape are

Growing up in Vail, I would often ride the chair lift with strangers and they would ask, “Where are you from?” I would reply “here.” The people I shared the chairlift with would tell me how lucky I was, but I would just smile politely and nod, unaware of my fortune. I had grown up in mountains and didn’t know anything different. As I have gotten older and been fortunate enough to have traveled outside of my familiar mountain range, I have realized how intensely beautiful mountains are.…

Pascasmayo, a beachy, coastal town where the Pacific ocean kisses the shores of Peru- a town beautifully crafted with sun-reflecting water and grainy sedimentary rock, hosted thousands of tourists each year- and this year, me. It is home to perseverant street vendors and taxi drivers, everyday Spanish-slang-speaking pedestrians, Fito, our humorous, laid-back in-country representative, talented, amateur artists, and the impoverished shadows of Peru. Every Experiment group is expected to perform some kind of community service. I, excitedly expected to work with children at a local shelter- ready to play with jubilance, but instead was in utter confusion when we arrived on foot to a local soup kitchen for the elderly. Seeing nothing, I searched for the snake on both sides of the tall, scorched golden grass and rocks for approximately thirty seconds until I realized my brother was insane—there was nothing near us. We all decided it would be best just to forget about so we continued up the hill. When we got to the top of the mountain, there was a bench made of various sized slate grey, oval rocks; it was ancient and slowly deteriorating but surprisingly stable. It looked like the Native Americans put it together before Columbus took all their land in 1492. As I assembled myself onto the bench, I admired the opening of the trees that was roughly ten feet wide; I was seeing the world at just the right…

Overgrown grass grew between the crevices that the rocks had formed. I walked up to the majestic flat stones and placed my hand on the one closest to me.
