Beauty and the Beast is a French folktale that has been translated by many to fit the culture in which it is being read. Beauty and the Beast is amongst the most popular told story in the western world. It has been rewritten over and over again mostly to adapt to the culture of the person whom is writing or speaking. In 1946, La Belle et la Bête was made into a French romantic/ fantasy film which included adaptations from the original fairytale. Then, in the 1990’s, Beauty and the Beast was transformed into a musical production by Disney studios. The production sparked an interested amongst many people all over the world. She is generally the same character in both the French, Disney and original version. She is the daughter of a successful merchant and is the most kindhearted soul in both versions. She is devoted to her father as her sisters just use him to get the finest material items. Belle would do anything for her father and she portrays this affection for him in both the film and fairy tale. She also takes the blame for her father’s punishment because if he would have never picked the rose from the garden he wouldn’t have gotten in trouble and gotten himself in this awful predicament. Also, in all of the stories Belle isn’t like her sisters in that she is not infatuated with riches and material items. This makes her more beautiful in the sense that she would rather be reading a book or going exploring in the forest rather than wearing beautiful ball gowns or looking at fine jewelry. Although they aren’t important to Belle, clothing is of huge importance to her sisters. Back then, clothing was very significant because it signified wealth and prosperity. If you has the nicest clothes and jewelry, you were probably the daughter of a wealthy merchant of you had some tie to royalty. We not only see this tie in Beauty and the Beast but we see it all over the realm of fairy tales throughout its time period. You also see many stories in which the daughter is very beautiful but doesn’t have or care about the clothing that she wears because she is preoccupied by other tasks, such as taking care of the family or doing chores.
