LGBT Rights And Discrimination In The United States

Improved Essays
In the United States, people pride themselves on equality, justice and on what is morally right for the American people. Although this statement allows for the country to parade around as unified people, under the tapestry is something far more sinister. Even though laws have been passed in the not so distant past, people of the the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, or the LGBT community, are discriminated against daily. This includes places of work or school, businesses, and even on the streets, people apart of the LGBT community are alienated because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. This backwards system still seems to baffle many Americans, because it is not natural for a human being to be persecuted for …show more content…
It moves from county to county, state to state, and eventually nation to nation. A similar incident on gay marriage had taken place in the state of Arkansas before the Supreme Court ruling in June. Arkansas senator and deacon at Southern Baptist church, Senator Bart Hester proposed bill SB 202 to rid Arkansas of all non-discrimination ordinances. He explained why in an interview when saying, “ ‘I am singled out as a politician. I am singled out because I am married to one woman… I want everyone in the LGBT community to have the same rights I do. I do not want them to have special rights that I do not have’ ” (Badash 1). This reasoning is almost humorous to those who are actually marginalized within the LGBT community. Laws that have protected trans and gay people are slowly being rolled back, and more and more people apart of the LGBT community are discriminated by their heterosexual counterparts because of their sexuality. Just like Kim Davis, these people use their religious freedoms to try and justify why they are allowed to discriminate, and marginalize another group of people. It is almost baffling to watch, as people explain that their privilege should not be infringed upon because they do not feel the effects of those who are unprivileged. When marginalized, illegitimized, groups of people, communities,

I had the opportunity this summer to interview Ed Yohnka the Director of Communications and Public Policy for the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois while working for Globalgirl Media Chicago, and he said “the discrimination against people who identify as transgender is horrific. With all kinds of terrible and difficult outcomes and ending that discrimination is important.” In the documentary Mala Mala the same issue was addressed by one of the women in the film, Ivana Fred, who said, “The transsexual community is the community that gets stepped on the most. Independently of a person’s position, their rights cannot be violated. This applies to any citizen even a homeless individual on the street has the right to have his rights recognized…

Many of us are out of touch with our fellow citizen's hardships and do not acknowledge the lack of opportunity that exists for some of the least privileged members of our communities and fails to recognize the great adversity they face. There should be more federal anti-discrimination laws to protect the civil rights of all transgender people especially in public settings such as schools, athletics, and employment. Today many young transgender men and women face debilitating discrimination on a daily basis at all levels and sectors of life. For many of them, the disparaging and hateful discrimination can start at a young age in school and haunt them into their adulthood when seeking employment even when they are just as or more qualified as…

Since the dawn of man, one fact has remained true to this very day: we are all unique. Upon this earth, the United States of America has always been notorious for its blend of every type of individual imaginable; it is home to nearly 318.9 million people, all of which descend from every crack and crevice of the planet with their own set of traits and characteristics. One unique group in particular has risen like the Phoenix from the ashes of inequality and changed the mindset of society throughout the twentieth and twenty first century, and it continues the fight today; this group is none other than the LGBT community, an assortment of American citizens who identify with a different sexuality or gender than what society has instituted as what…

Gay love has been an issue for the longest now and it’s beginning to get out of hand. But that’s not the only thing that’s getting out of hand, what also is getting out of hand is societies view on those who are transgender. Which brought to my attention that some people are so reluctant to change that they resort violence and brute force in order to shape things into their image whenever something that they say is wrong starts to occur. They are only interested and care about what they want to see is “right” day to day. The way we approach people who are gay or transgender is outright ridiculous and ignorant which can easily be added to the millions of other situations where ignorance has occurred in history.…

We as a nation are thought to be bonded and supportive towards each other, but our beliefs have separated us into thinking that only one way is the correct way to be accepted within society. Religion that has been taught to many across the state bash the thoughts and hopes of others. Being born a certain gender does not define who a person truly are on the inside. Transgender men and women face discrimination from everyone including each other. Some people believe that these numbers have no correlation or that they couldn’t possibly have anything to do with each other. I believe though, that while belonging to a LGBT+ group may not cause mental illness, the combination of the stigma around mental disorders and certain LGBT+ groups and the lack of tolerance our society still has today certainly should not be discounted as a factor. If “therapy” still existed that used behavioral, cognitive, psychoanalytic behavioral, cognitive, and psychoanalytic methods to prove to you that something as natural as…

Introduction In 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States made the historical decision of legalizing same-sex marriage all across the nation, following decades of sociopolitical mobilization by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and their allies. However, many members of the LGBT community have criticized the disproportionate political-agenda focus of the national LGBT community on marriage equality, arguing that this narrow national focus sidesteps other urgent community issues like racism, class conflicts, transphobia, youth homelessness, and others (Spade and Willse 2013; Duggan 2012a; Warner 1999). Moreover, many LGBT activists and scholars, some of whom are black, have argued that the legalization…
