I have had the privilege of working with Kylee Hunter through an organization called B.E.S.T. (Bladder Exstrophy Support Team) for several years. Kylee was born with Bladder Exstrophy. It is a rare congenital anomaly that involves a baby being born with the bladder on the outside of the body and often includes abnormalities of the pelvis and genitalia. Those with this anomaly go through multiple surgeries, incontinence, and urinary tract infections. Because of the stigma of physical differences and incontinence, they often experience emotional problems besides their physical difficulties. B.E.S.T started seventeen years ago to give Exstrophy families emotional, educational, and social support.
Because of the rarity of Bladder Exstrophy, children with this anomaly often feel alone and different from everyone else. For the past seventeen years, Kylee’s family has planned and carried out a weekend campout each summer for families with a Bladder Exstrophy member. The camp out has been successful and grown each year, with participants coming from California, several states, and even several countries around the world. Besides the planned recreational activities, they offer educational sessions addressing topics common among the youth. Every member of the Hunter family helps with the camp out. She has taken part and developed talents in all areas of her life: academics, sports, music, church, leadership, public speaking and service to others. Kylee continues to excel in all these areas. Her warm, smiling, and caring personality naturally attracts others to her. Along with being a role model for children of various ages who also have Bladder Exstrophy, she is also a role model for others of her own age. She is a leader who set goals and then, despite challenges, works hard until she reaches
