Clarkson joined us to inspire a discussion about the intersection between biopolitics, identity, citizenship and nationalism. To begin, Dr. Clarkson discussed the 2003 Department of Homeland Security memo signaling security personnel to be alert for terrorist who concealed weapons under women’s clothing. The publishing of this memo would foreshadow the eventual linkage of transgendered people with terror/terrorism. A central theme to Clarkson's talk was the misrepresentation and visibility factors of transgendered people in contemporary society.…

These groups are called out for their variance from norms and are physically and emotionally attacked for their differences. Groups such as women who make up fifty percent of the population in the United States remain oppressed by structures that were put in place hundreds of years ago.…

She describes how “trans communities coin new terms such as hir and s/he to identify and define transgender” (Pershai, 56). These additions to the heterosexual-favored language are a way for transgender individuals to obtain equal opportunity to identify within the heteronormative social structure. Pershai rationalizes these inclusions by clarifying how transgender communities cannot be categorized through the heterosexual language and “goes beyond the limits of socially and culturally constructed spaces and categories” (Pershai, 56). These aspects of discourse confine the expression of gender categories other than “man” and “woman.”…
