In ¨Harrison Bergeron,¨ Kurt Vonnegut uses imagery to assist the reader in visioning his short story. He uses similes such as ¨ … thoughts fled in panic, like bandits from a burglar alarm¨ (1) and ¨ a ballerina arose, swaying like a willow¨(4), his use of similes compares the subjects of his sentences to other things, in order to create the comparison of the ballerina and the willow. Vonnegut also uses onomatopoeia to describe the sounds, for instance ¨shriek¨ (3), ¨barking cries¨ (3) and ¨squawk¨ (3). The use of onomatopoeia is to create the sounds that the characters in the story are hearing.
