Throughout history, man has shown a great tendency to gravitate towards decisions that end in destruction, especially if the destruction will not directly affect himself. Occurences such as war declarations do not necessarily have to be decided on by the masses, but only a single man’s will. By that man’s will, millions of innocent lives can be lost, his own usually not included. Kurt Vonnegut is a fantastic author that uses satire in order to draw attention and ridicule the flaws of mankind, most of which end in destruction and chaos of some sort. In two of his novels, Cat’s Cradle and Slaughterhouse-Five, damage and destruction of millions is determined by what can potentially be a single man’s decision.…

Do we, as readers, pick up on the many universal ideas, or themes, authors provide in short stories, novels, or even social media postings? Theme, as literarydevices.net states, is the “a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly.” Theme is used by authors because it reels in readers with its emotional appeal; however, some of the emotions directed towards a theme do not have to be positive. Authors use theme to impact the mind and strike the hearts of readers, furthermore, creating a riveting, enjoyable experience for their readers. Ray Bradbury uses several major and minor themes throughout his novel, “Fahrenheit 451,” to illustrate his universal ideas behind Montag’s daily futuristic…

The treatment of mental patients has greatly improved since the 1960s, but it still is not perfect. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a novel written by Ken Kesey and published in 1962. Chief Bromden, a schizophrenic patient in an insane asylum who pretends to be dumb and deaf to avoid confrontation, narrates what happens in the ward. When authority hating Randle McMurphy is committed to the ward, he notices the head nurse, Nurse Ratched, manipulates her patients to keep her authority, rather than actually benefit the patients. Nurse Ratched clearly mistreats her patients and gives them unnecessary treatments.…
In Stephen King’s novel The Gunslinger, there are many themes, but the theme which stands out the most is survival. The gunslinger also known as Ronald has a quest to catch the man in black and while doing so, his main objective is survival. We see many examples of this throughout the novel, some examples include when the lady in the bar wants to die, so the gunslinger shot her but then everybody else in the bar attempts to kill him so he end up killing them all or when they almost runout of food because the limited amount of resources they have while in the desert or when the Gunslinger has to leave Jake to die in order to complete the quest.…
How to Write with Style Everyone has his or her own writing style, and some writing styles are considerably more distinct than others; however, anyone’s writing style can and should be improved over time. There really is no one specific or perfect way to write because everyone has different opinions on what is well written and what is poorly written, so it is important to alter one’s style so as to capture the attention of very different audiences. Kurt Vonnegut, an amazingly talented author from the 20th century, wrote an essay entitled “How to Write with Style” which gives excellent techniques on how to better anyone’s writing style. Each of his techniques has an explanation as to why they should be used, and he uses each of them in his essay.…
John Carpenters ’s 1982 horror film, The Thing was made as a premise for social commentary on the deterioration of humanity, warning society of the devastating potential of thinking as individuals in isolation rather than a collective. These themes are accentuated through the use of an alien specimen that enters the world of American male scientists based in Antarctica. The alien (or “Thing”) infects living organisms and attempts to take over the human race by ‘imitating’ them, leaving the men in a fight for their own survival as they try to differentiate between “human” and an alien imitation of a human. The term humanity itself is redefined in this film and is stripped to its bare minimum: the mere biological relationship between humans.…
Every author has their own unique writing style. Kurt Vonnegut’s just so happens to be very effective. The unique pairing of black humor, social satire, and science fiction make the stories of Kurt Vonnegut both intriguing and effective. His way of satirizing contemporary society using themes such as war, sex, and death makes his stories bluntly honest. To verify the assumption made, three novels were read.…
In chapters four through six, the themes of ambition and obsession are common. Frankenstein has ambition for learning and an obsession with philosophy and chemistry. In chapter four, Frankenstein says that he became so “ardent and eager that the stars often disappeared in the light of the morning whilst I was yet engaged in my laboratory”(Shelley 41). Victor was so eager and had so much ambition too work in the lab and create new goals that it soon became his obsession. His obsession with science became his priority in life and he soon achieved his goal.…

The theme for my storyboard for the book Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman was about helping out in the community that you are in. I picked this theme because in Seedfolks all of the characters put in effort to help make the garden a better place. All of the characters had something against someone but they get involved in the garden because the either notice how the garden community were kind and helpful or they were forced to go by someone who thinks the garden will help their problems. The Character Sae Young is the main character in my storyboard. Sae Young worked in a laundromat, but one day at work a man came in with a gun under his coat and beat up Sae Young and she passed out because he kicked her really hard.…
What if we can travel through time just to experience weird events? The novel that Kurt Vonnegut wrote, Slaughterhouse five, has some questionable logic. Based on the characters that appear, Vonnegut seems to have a whacky imagination. Especially when in Vonnegut’s novel, includes aliens and a pornstars. This novel is a postmodern because of the Awareness of Intertextuality, Time Concept, and Magic Realism.…
In celebration of his 50th birthday, Kurt Vonnegut wrote a book to himself as a present which is mentioned by Vonnegut in the preface of the book. The name of this book is Breakfast of Champions. This book is primarily about the meeting between a car dealer named Dwayne Hoover and an old writer named Kilgore Trout. This meeting leads to Dwayne going insane. At first, this book may seem to be a mix of irrelevant information with no exact chronological order.…
