Leadership is an important factor in an “employees’ job satisfaction, retention, and accountability” (Metzger et al, 2014, p. 337). According to Metzger et al (2014), effective leadership “can lead to higher-quality patient care and patient outcomes” (Metzger et al, 2014, p. 337). As an APRN, I will expand upon the leadership skills that I have begun to develop in my clinical practice, my nursing profession and at the systems level. As a graduate level nurse, my role will require additional leadership responsibilities. Family Nurse Practitioners (and other APRNs) should be active in health care policy and legislation, especially as it effects advanced nursing practice. “Nurses’ involvement in health policy development ensures that health services are: safe, effective, available and inexpensive” (Shariff, 2013, p.1). This will be an area of leadership that I need to develop, as I have little experience with health policy
