Whether or not you have listened to Nirvana, everyone knows the memorable Nevermind album cover with the naked baby floating in the water. Lead singer of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain is known for his zen personality and deep thinking. Everything he wrote came from his heart and has a distinct meaning to him, his ability to express his emotions through rock music makes him one of the most well-known artists. The album accounts as media due to the fact that Kurt Cobain used his platform to confront imperfections of society, both through his album covers and the music itself. The band recorded an abundant amount of demos in 1988 and they made a deal with Sub Pop, a Seattle record label. Nirvana released their first album, Bleach and only sold thirty-five-thousand copies. Kurt used Bleach to express anger and embrace the outsiders of society. Prior to Nevermind’s album release, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” was released and reached the top charts. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” set the tone of what Nirvana really wanted to express within their music. Once Nevermind was released, it placed at one-hundred-fourth-four on the Billboard Top two-hundred and stayed there for two-hundred-fifty-four weeks. Then when we got back a picture of a baby underwater, I thought it would look nice to add a fish hook with a dollar bill on it. And so an image was born” (Cobain, 1991). There is five key characteristic to the album art; the obvious nude baby, money, font, and the color. Each characteristic reflects the band’s values. The baby is a symbol of youth and innocence, the baby is untouched as it's floating in the water freely. Vulnerability is displayed by the baby’s nudity, this plays on the fact we are born free and pure. Money is seen attached to a fish hook in front of the baby, the bill is a symbol of materialism and wealth that is infiltrating our society. Consumerism is shown by the money being attached to a hook suggesting the “baiting” of consumers to indulge. In the left corner of the album it displays NIRVANA: NEVERMIND, given it’s in all caps it is trying to make a statement. It can be interpreted that the band is saying we are Nirvana and here is our message. Below the band name, the Nevermind has a warped font. This has a deeper meaning, Nirvana itself is defined as “a transcendent state in which there is neither suffering, desire, nor sense of self, and the

What does an album cover do? Music itself is not visual, only sound that often times is paired with visuals. This is because together, a visual and a sound, enhance the effectiveness of the piece as a whole. An example of this would be in a movie when a dramatic scene is shown, a dramatic song will be played with it to enhance the scenes effectiveness. Album covers utilize this unique fusion of mediums in a similar way to make the album more marketable, and to create a visual effect on the music making the content more enjoyable.…
