This dates back to the founding of America. Dale Spender points out in “Language and Reality, Who Made the World?” that many of the ideas we accept as normal have been constructed by heteronormative white males. Language shapes the world around us and these men did not care to understand gender/queer theory. They left words out that would describe boys that are feminine and girls that are masculine. With no words to describe these people it almost implies that they don’t exist, hence, they don’t matter. This can be reversed by teaching our youth the words that describe these people that don’t fit into the masculine male or feminine female category. If we teach children not everyone is the same sexually then people of the LGBTQ community will no longer be out casted but instead considered normal just like everyone
