Kubota Garden Case Study

Seattle's American-Japanese garden The Kubota Garden was established in the 1930s by Mr. Fujitaro Kubota. Mr. Kubota emigrated to the United States in 1907, established the Kubota Gardening Company in 1923, and purchased five acres of logged-off swamp land in the Rainer Beach neighborhood in 1927. As Fujitaro's landscaping business prospered, his Rainier Beach garden grew to include twenty aces. It was the family home, the business office, the design and display center. And it was a nursery to grow plant materials for the gardens installed by the Kubota Gardening company. Mr. Kubota died at the age of 94 in 1973. Nearly a decade later, when the 20-acre property became a target for condominium developers, the Seattle Landmarks Preservation …show more content…
The Kubota Garden is truly a hidden gem. Although I live less than 15 miles away, I had never heard of it. I decided one sunny Saturday to visit with two second graders and a preschooler. Based on the sparse website, lack of advertising, and the general location, I did not have high …show more content…
I despise going to bad restaurants so I read some reviews all of which warned against it, however said friend could not be persuaded to change his mind so off we went to the north side. My definition of good service is that my tea is never empty and our waiter achieved that with flying colors. He was very attentive and I have nothing bad to say about him. Same with the food. We ordered sushi for the most part. The California was excellent, along with the no name roll. I requested that my edamame be hot and it was poorly microwaved, but other than that I have no complaints with the food. Apparently the building was recently renovated. At first glance nothing seems wrong with it, but by the time we walked out the front door both me and my friend were very uncomfortable. The music was a combination of what sounded like bad recorded karaoke and way below top 40 pop/rap. Oh wait, they played "I Will Survive" at one point. I prefer my restaurant music to blend into my eating experience. For the first five minutes it was amusing, but past that point it was like fingernails on a chalk board. My second complaint is one that is all to frequent in any public eating experience: disgusting restroom. Being a woman I can only speak of my personal experience and I don't want to get too graphic. Lets just say my shoes stuck to the floor. The strangest thing about the whole

Emma Marris presents us with a new way of viewing nature in the first chapter of her book, “Rambunctious Garden”. She explains that the definition of nature depicted in our “glossy magazines” describing a place “somewhere distant, wild and free” is incorrect, as it “blinds us” from the truth (Marris 1). Marris argues that we must adjust this definition to also include the nature found in “the bees whizzing down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan” and “the butterfly bushes that grow alongside the urban river” as well as the nature found in “managed national parks” (Marris 2). She uses experiences gained during her time spent in the forests of Hawaii and in Australia’s Scotia Sanctuary as evidence to support her argument. Marris also makes the point…

A Place of the Heart Gardens are known for bringing beauty and color into people’s life and on many occasions they hold secrets to the creator's life. People plant their gardens to express themselves in a different way other than just words. The garden’s design or plants use can relate to certain aspects in a character's life. In the novel Samurai’s Garden, by Gail Tsukiyama, the author metaphorically compares the two very different gardens of Matsu and Sachi to show how they overcome their life challenges and how they both use their gardens as a place of therapy.…

The garden is addressing the issue of there not being enough fresh produce provided at the local food pantry. Us as individuals helping in the garden all came together to help make the garden a better place, we pick weeds, watered plants, and also picked the produce off of the plants. All of these things helped with the process of making it possible to donate the produce to the food pantry. When a person helps with a project like this is can make them feel very good and want to keep helping. It also brings people together to help serve the…

Being forced to abandon a safe haven can cause one to hopelessly cling to the memories created there. In Gerda Klein’s memoir, All But My Life, she and her family are forced to leave their house. In this excerpt, she wanders throughout her garden for one last time. She then starts to reminisce about all the memories created there and realizes that her life will never be the same again, she has truly lost the innocence that her childhood once possessed. Through the use of concrete diction and juxtaposing imagery, Klein establishes a nostalgic yet sorrowful tone to illustrate how one can cling to their past yet cannot avoid the inevitable future, which causes them to see the world around them in a new light.…

There are specters in the United States, and their names are heart disease and farming-ignorance. Spread across the United States is a fast food and MSG epidemic-- as equally important as well is a decline in the knowledge of producing healthy grown food. To rid this problem from all of the U.S. would be a daunting task, nevertheless could be made possible if started locally. One way to help bring about change would be to establish a Vertical Garden-Bio Dome Club at Northwest Florida State College. The formation of a VG-BD Club could begin to boast access to healthy foods, aid in improvement to the local area’s dependence on outside assistance for key resources, and help maintain life sustainment skills.…

There is no place for children to run and play, and the public school system in Little Tokyo is suffering partly due to this lack of green space. These students and the members of the community deserve a public park rather than having to congregating in open space in the built environment. They have to be creative in their urban land use in accommodation for nature in the neighborhood by not only focusing on environmental scales but also the built environment. (“The Face of Little Tokyo Is Changing” by Valentina Cardenans and Gayle…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
