An example of the Klan’s actions involved... “‘breaking into their houses at the dead of night, dragging them from their beds, torturing them in the most inhuman manner, and in many instances murdering’” (Effects of the Ku Klux Klahn 1). The main tactic of the KKK was to torture and then kill to place more fear into the African Americans. The methods that the KKK used to limit the progression of social justice were inhumane and disgusting. The presence of the KKK brought hatred, violence, and depression to the lives of Americans. People that were not categorized as white and successful, lived their lives knowing that their family and themselves were in danger 100% of the time and that you are not socially accepted. An example of social inequality that occurred is that many shopkeepers placed signs outside that read, “ No Dogs, No Jews” (Engelbert). Not only did the KKK target African Americans, but all foreign races. Ways that the KKK targeted Jews were boycotting Jewish owned shops and burning crosses in front of synagogues (Engelbert). For almost a century the KKK was active, and their only notable accomplishment was being responsible for thousands of deaths. When the government would fight back against the Ku Klux Klan, the KKK would target them. In one summer alone, 30 black homes and 37 black churches were firebombed (Effects of the Klu Klux Klan). Over 80 volunteers were beaten by white mobs or racist police officers and three men, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan on June 21st, 1964. On the opposing side of the fighting, many people were able to influence hope and strength to American citizens being targeted by the KKK. Martin Luther King Jr marched and spoke about fighting social injustice with peace. Malcolm X spoke about taking matters into his own hands and fighting back against the enemy. Without many of the Civil Rights Leaders, the KKK would have continued to gain power and never be stopped.
