In order to see myself and have others see me as a professional nurse, it is important to articulate my personal philosophy of nursing. “Because there are different ways of knowing, each person has a unique way of finding truth, in other words, identifying our individual philosophy (Masters, 2014, pp. 100-101). Each nurse is unique and will have a unique philosophy but there will be similarities that us together as a profession (Masters, 2014, p. 100).

It is simple yet complex and it is all shades of grey. I believe that this is because at the core of nursing is people. Patients, families, and nurses are people. Because people are at the center of nursing and humans are complex individuals with a vast array of needs, values, beliefs, and attitudes, so too is the profession of nursing.
The core of nursing is centered on the human condition. Dictionary.com defines the human condition as “the positive and negative aspects of existence as a human being, especially the inevitable events such as birth, childhood, adolescence, love, sex, reproduction, aging, and death (Human condition, n.d.). As a recent Associates Degree of Nursing graduate I have been in a place of constant learning, stress, and unknowns for a long time. The transition from student to registered nurse has not been an easy one. Although in nursing you are always learning, I want to get to a place of competency in my practice.
