Kreon In Eteokles Antigone

The main attribute I found that Kreon admires most in a person is Loyalty to the city. The most obvious example of this is Kreon's refusal to bury one of the two deceased brothers of Antigone (753, 231-244). Eteokles was loyal to his city until death. As a result, his body received all the proper burial rituals that were accustomed to his culture. However, Polyneikes was not loyal to Thebes. Subsequently, his body was unburied and left to rot. Not only is this an example of Kreon abusing his power, but also an example of him defying the will of the gods. This is made evident when Tiresias tells Kreon "the gods will not accept our prayers or offerings of burnt meat" (774, 1126-1128). Even after Tiresias tells Kreon that the gods are not pleased with him he continues to enforce his law not to bury the body of

This is ultimately a negative quality for a leader to have. If Kreon is unable to sacrifice some of his beliefs for the good of his people than he is not fit to lead anything. In my opinion, Kreon's unwillingness to compromise created a snowball effect of his families, as well as his own, destruction. For instance, Kreon refused to bury Polyneikes' body, which ultimately caused the suicide of Antigone, which lead to the suicide of Kreon's son, Haimon (779, 1368-1370). Even though the death of Haimon is a tragedy, possibly the biggest blow to Kreon was the death of his wife. Not only does she kill herself after finding out about the death of her son, she curses Kreon's name (787, 1456-1458). In my opinion, Kreon seemed to be the type of person to make decisions in the heat of the moment and refuse to think

“This girl here was already very insolent in/contravening laws we had proclaimed”, Creon expressed to the chorus leader in Sophocles’ play Antigone (542-544). Polyneices and Eteocles were instructed to rule Thebes alternatively each year by Creon. Eteocles did not want to give up the thrown to Polyneices after his year of ruling Thebes was over.…

In this society an absolute ruler heads the government, which is Antigone’s uncle, King Creon. Before Creon came to power, Antigone’s brothers Eteocles and Polyneices agreed to rule Thebes in alternating years. However, after Eteocles’s year was up he refused to give up his throne. As a result Ployneices gathered an army and invaded Thebes, while in battle the brothers killed each other. When Creon was named King he set forth a decree forbidding Polyneices’s burial, he swore that “No one shall bury him, no one mourn for him, but his body must lie in the fields, a sweet treasure for carrion birds” (Sophocles 693).…

Even after pleads from her sister and indignant threats from Creon, she chooses to bury her brother instead of leave him to the wrath of nature. In her eyes, honoring one’s family is not only morally right, but a law. She remains faithful to the gods and abides by their laws in order to reach justice. Her success in attaining justice is larger than any earthly concept; it would mean receiving respect and glory, and living eternally after her death.…

In addition, which is significant, Kreon can’t afford to be disobeyed in the first decree he releases. He becomes a king after a destructive war between Oedipus’ sons—and his job is to replace chaos with order in Thebes. Hence, Kreon simply can’t afford to be disobeyed in his first decree—let alone by a sister of a traitor. Nonetheless, it should be stated that Sophocles portrays Kreon as a “cliché” tyrant, who is willing to use any mean to achieve his purpose (Morwood, 40). His unjustifiable tyranny materializes vividly when he threatens, without any legal base, the Guard, who told him that someone buried Polyneike’s corpse, if he does not reveal who commit the “dirty” crime…

Furthermore, he promulgates, “the State is King!”, which further underscores Creon’s belief in his own superiority not only over his people but also in comparison to the gods (Sophocles 54). Such hubris informs his actions and ultimately yields his demise, especially when he attempts to escape his fate as prophesized by Tiresias. Tiresias attempts to make a sacrifice to the gods in exchange for a prophecy, but it will not immolate, and the birds continue to fight, which portends that the gods are angry. Tiresias further states: “Think: all men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is incorrect, and repairs the evil. The only crime is hubris” (Sophocles).…

What makes a leader effective? Making broad decisions can be a daunting task, but good leaders know to keep the best interests of their citizens prized above all else. When leaders divert from this vision is when they cause harm both to their reputation and to their people. In Antigone, the king of Thebes, Creon, orders Antigone to death after she disobeys his law. He decreed that the body of Antigone’s brother Polynices would not be buried, in opposition to the gods’ mandate regarding burial.…
