The advertising business began in the early 18th- century newspapers. Douglas Haddow gives us the information that “the first ads were dailies like the Boston News-Letter and Virginia Gazette”(Haddow, par.2). Most of the ads were text listing information about “new products, property sales or descriptions of runaway slaves and reward details”(Haddow,par.2). After World War I, the advertisement business took off with the fall of the empires and the rise of the progressive middle class. “The economy was booming...it was the beginning of a symbiotic relationship between advertising and media”(Haddow, par.7). Kreimer argues “the First Amendment doctrines developed...to protect the weak links on the internet” (Kreimer, 3). Kreimer states this to first give his readers his own personal thoughts on the subject and then to prove his argument. Kreimer also states “ proxy censorship of the internet is no passing fad: it is a growth industry of internet regulation” (Kreimer,5). Kreimer believe there should be a filtering mechanism in place, there are others like Hilary Rosen, who believe that there should be no changes to the system. Hilary Rosen states that advertising labels do not need any regulations and or supervisions and they should be free to promote their product however they please, no matter if it offends any race, gender, or even current events. To disprove this argument, the first thing to look at is the ever-expanding social media and the internet in general. As social media expands, more people begin to have a voice in society, which can be both a positive and negative situation. If the mechanism is put in place,we are able to keep the younger generation,who will eventually have a voice on social media, from being exposed to inappropriate and unnecessary advertisements. This would be beneficial for them because they are the future of the world, so we need to keep them from the horrible content in certain

    Upon skimming the later essays of, “Signs of Life in the USA” by Jack Solomon and Sonia Maasik, I felt especially perplexed by what I read on pages 248-249 on the first paragraph of the essay, “Advertising Does Not Stand Alone” by Julia B. Corbett. After deep consideration, I ultimately determined that this portion of the essay begins by explaining how nothing in society can have power without working for the benefit of other institutions as well as its own.
