All the articles stated a lack of understanding of the benefits and effects of Kratom and that further knowledge is needed to draw a conclusive conclusion, but that Kratom is considered dangerous due to the small amount of research associated with the drug. When Kratom was not mixed with other drugs, benefits of Kratom included improved alertness, pain relief, and reduces opioid withdrawal symptoms. Buprenorphine also, reduces opioid withdrawal symptoms. Both drugs were seen to have abuse potential, but Buprenorphine’s risk of abuse is low. Buprenorphine is seen as a safe, effective drug to use for ceasing opioid dependence. Also, the articles had large sample sizes which allowed the data to be generalized to all opioid dependent patients. Most research attached to Kratom is of self medicating Kratom users, most of which mix other drugs with Kratom and become ill. In some of the cases the benefits of Kratom include reduced opioid withdrawal symptoms and mild withdrawal symptoms when Kratom is ceased. Extended treatment of Buprenorphine, with counseling or a support system, is associated with better success. This could be due to the fact that patients are more compliant to take the prescribed dosage of medication, which decreases the chance of a relapse to opioid
