Kovalam in Kerala is one of the hot tourist destinations in India. Kovalam is called as the beach town in the Thiruvananthapuram city on the Arabian sea coast. The literal meaning of Kovalam is “a grove of coconut trees”. There are plenty of things you can do in the enchanting beach destination town of Kovalam. Sun bath lying on the beach or swimming in the cool waters, have an oil and Ayurvedic massage, savor your tongue with seafood or try your hand at fishing. Have a ride on surfboards and boogie boards. You can shop for handicraft items or spices.

1. Lighthouse beach:
It is among the best Kovalam tourist places that draws numerous visitors each year from different parts of the globe.
• Lighthouse is the largest of the three beaches and located atop the rocky hillock called Karumkal hill. The 35-meter-tall Lighthouse gives the beach its name of “Lighthouse beach”. There is a German bakery here where you can relish some pancakes with some juices and shakes.
• Hawah beach: Hawah which translates to wind became famous mainly due to the foreign women who were seen strolling or swimming topless on the beach. Rush of tourists continues although the topless swimming is now banned in the place.
• Samudra beach: A peaceful and quiet beach in comparison to the other two mentioned above. Located on the northern most region of Kovalam the beach is not crowded and is an ideal spot for those looking for serenity and want to be away from the hectic pace of life they normally have.

The river has two dams constructed over it and is a primary river in Trivandrum. The river is one of the recommended places to visit in Kovalam, Kerala. There is a boat club at the bank of the river from where you can enjoy canoe rides, cruises across the river or go kayaking.
3. Edakallu:
A very popular place on the shore between the two beaches of Hawah and Lighthouse from where you can have a spectacular view of the sun set. You can take photographs of the different color patterns of the sky and add to your collection of the memories of your trip.
4. Vellayani lake:
Vellayani is the largest freshwater lake in Trivandrum and a good picnic spot for the tourists to enjoy an evening as the water is calm and crystal clear. The annual boat races during Onam are held here at the Vellayani lake. It has a Durga temple which is the only temple that allows non-Brahmins as priests.
5. Valiyathur Pier:
It is a 214-meter-long pier on the Valiyathur port that gives an excellent view of the sea and the coast. The pier was a hustling port in the initial days for transporting goods and other fishing activities. It is now a quiet serene place where tourists visit for photography and angling.
