Candidates running for political office need to be likable, charismatic, and trustworthy. These leadership traits and characteristics impact a candidate’s chances for obtaining office. The more of these qualities a candidate possesses the higher the candidate’s chances become of being elected to office (Borchers, 2005; Burrell, 2008; Conger, Kanungo & Menon, 2000; Choi, 2006; Goethals, 2005; Levine & Boaks, 2014; Rejai & Phillips, 2004; Schroedel, Bligh, Merolla & Gonzalez, 2013; Teven, 2008). When Joseph Schlesinger wrote Ambition and Politics in 1996, everything changed (Fox and Lawless 644). He created a “rational choice paradigm” to help understand potential candidates’ decisions to run for political office (Fox and Lawless 644). The rational choice paradigm recognizes that political ambition is a “strategic response to a political opportunity structure” and that citizens have a higher likelihood to decide to run for office when they have favorable political and structural circumstances (Fox and Lawless 644). Based on previous studies, “the number of open seats, term-limit requirements, levels of legislative professionalism, partisan composition of the constituency, and party congruence with constituents” are all considered when potential candidates make their decision (Fox and Lawless 644). These factors are relatively exogenous, meaning they influence the decision, and the decision does not influence the factors.…

There are two main phases of a presidential election: the primary process, and the general election. The primary process is when each political party selects a candidate to represent the party in the general election. The general election is when candidates from multiple parties compete against each other to become president. Although there are multiple parties, we will only be discussing how the process is for Republicans and Democrats because while a few smaller parties are sometimes able to gain votes, a third party has not been able to win since the 1800s. Here, we will be going through the process on how a United States presidential candidate is nominated for president.…

Business experts such as Donald Trump, Jeb Bush and Carly Fiorina, Doctors such as Ben Carson and Rand Paul, Military Veterans such as Lindsey Graham, a minister such as Mike Huckabee, and a lawyer such as George Pataki make up a majority of the Republican Party and…
