The skin lightening industry is worth millions of dollars and is still growing in many countries around the world. The industry is booming for many reasons, such as: perceived benefits of light skin, the type of advertisements companies use, and a lack of governmental intervention despite the known consequences of using skin lighteners.…

I know I still see plenty of the “ideal” woman in ads all over the place. Well, aligning with the third wave of feminism, much of the reasoning behind the cosmetic industry now is isn’t fixing yourself because you feel like you need to, but rather improving yourself because you want to. The biggest contributor to this in my opinion is social media. The biggest influencer being YouTube, a place where thousands of videos are being uploaded and viewed daily all about cosmetics. From a personal experience, I don’t think I would know anything about makeup if it weren’t for YouTube. This platform allows everyday people to say their opinions on products, show how products are used, and teach others tutorials on how to apply makeup. Because of this, knowledge is being spread more easily, allowing more people to be involved with once a “prestigious” industry. It is showing people that women can make themselves look how they want, not because they need to look a certain way, but because they now know how to make themselves feel…

When a high school girl walks into a beauty store in Seoul, South Korea, she is immediately hit by a tidal wave of product advertisements promising her lighter, brighter skin. Creams, lotions, toners, washes, makeup... All of them are marketing to her insecurities. She looks at the airbrushed models on the posters and sighs, jealous of their milky complexions. Her stomach in knots, she glances down at her tanned arms and realizes that she had gone outside without sunscreen that day. Her mother was always warning her not to get too dark. “If you’re light, it’ll be easier to find a job when you’re older.” With that in the back of her mind, she picks out a lightening cream and gladly forks over her allowance without a second thought. In her culture,…

Beauty industry in Australia has undergone tremendous changes in recent years and is growing at a furious rate, advancing in professionalism, technology and capability. The traditional beauty therapy offering services such as manicures, facials and waxing may soon become a thing of the past. Replacing these traditional services are what are known dermal therapies and cosmetic medicine. The term refers to a specialty that primarily focuses on improving cosmetic appearance of the skin through both invasive and non-invasive treatment modalities (Russel n.d.). This includes chemical skin peels, injectable treatments, laser hair removal, skin resurfacing and other advanced dermal techniques that target specific skin concerns on a deeper cellular level. Dermal therapies are also considered treatments which provide consistently visible results, as opposed to "fluffy" or "feel-good" treatments (Professional Beauty 2011). Ten years ago we had only a number of facial creams and basic professional…
