In Sucheng Chan's essay, Immigration and Livelihood, 1840s to 1930s, the major focus came in the detailed economic, social, and political strife of Asian immigrants during that time period. Chan encompassed on their accomplishments that went unnoticed, the jobs they held, and how they were treated in order to ensure a better understanding the history of Asian immigrants in the United States while legal discrimination was still permissible in the United States. Though Chan discussed in his essay the other Asian nationalities, that of the Japanese and Filipino people, he explained how their experiences followed suit of the Chinese. Background…
1. In the United States, it is obvious that there are numerous immigrants who live here. Every person has their own reason for why they wanted to immigrate to America. The most common reason for people to immigrate to the U.S is to join a family member. Other reasons include fleeing from poverty, and conflicts in their country.…
Such as how it affected the Korean community and what lasting effects this event had on the Korean population. Many of the interviews had clever socio-historical analysis bringing up these problem and giving them a human face, meaning putting matters into the minds of the readers. With this it clarifies the historical, political, and economic factors that render them in the lives and voices of Korean Americans. Many more questions come within reading this book. As the child of an immigrant family, the immigration policies are of great importance to my family along with many other families. The immigration policies affect many legal and illegal immigrant families and their U.S. born children. The ever-changing laws pertaining to immigrants and how to handle them splits families apart and deports citizens acting fully within the law who have done nothing to deserve their unjust treatment. The laws regarding the deportation of immigrants are never fully clear and are constantly changing thus, leaving many immigrants lost and confused as to their situations not knowing if they are going to be removed from the country at any moment. An immigrant may apply for a residency renewal and find themselves in…
Laws were passed to restrict immigrants, one such act was the Chinese Exclusion Act. Chinese immigrants already residing in America were treated with great hostility. This internal social conflict highlighted the blemishes in the Gilded Age. Immigrants approached the United States in hopes of achieving the ultimate promise of “the land of the free,”, the American dream, but unfortunately, they were abruptly…
My Family immigrated to the United States when I was just two years old. Growing up in an unknown place surrounded by a foreign language was difficult to say the least, if not for me then for my hardworking parents. This may have not been the most convenient of circumstances being raised in total isolation with no family, but it transformed me into the woman I am today. From this I have been able to appreciate my surroundings more, knowing the things people take for granted in the United States are privileges in other countries. Drivers complain about potholes in the roads, where i think of them as lucky to even have roads.…
In 1898, the Japanese were able to enter U.S. mainland without a visa from Hawaii, resulting in a mass immigration of Japanese people (JACL, 3). In order to understand the history of Japanese-Americans, first, the origins of Asian-Americans must be understood. Broadly speaking, the term “Asian-American” refers to those of East, South, and Southeast Asian descent, with Chinese and Japanese-Americans consisting the largest portion of the Asian-American community. As Erika Lee, author of The Making of Asian American History puts it, “By the time large-scale Asian immigration to the united states began in the mid nineteenth century, diverse Asian people were considered one monolithic group and were fixed in the American mind as backward, submissive, and inferior” (Lee, 7). Thus, after the first wave of Chinese people– the first large Asian group to immigrate to America (Lee, 8)– other Asian immigrants, including the Japanese were labeled as racially inferior and disruptive to American society.…
Old immigrants, such as the British, are settlers that came to the Americas, mostly from western and northern Europe, mostly from England and English territories. Firstly, old immigration they came to the Americas as families or groups and were literate and skilled. Moreover, old British immigrants came to the Americas for a wide variety of reasons such as political, social, and economic reasonings. The political reasoning would be because they would have freedoms. Socially they would have their religious freedom and economically they would be able to own more land.…
I do not live the typical Asian American life. I reside in a state of limbo, somewhere between being full American and full Asian. My well-off, Wisconsin bred parents are not what people expect when they see me from the outside. From the exterior, it’s easy to assume that my parents (or at least one of them) are Asian.…
America and Korea: Cultural Difference Based on the Six Dimensions of Culture Leadership is unique to all organizations. In Geert Hofstede’s research he studies different nations and how their cultures affect their work place. It is an interesting concept to see how different countries relate to the employment environment. Hofstede himself describes culture as “the collective programming of the mind distinguishing the members of one group or category of people from others.” I have been to Korea and as different as we look we have a lot of similarities from an outside perspective.…
Immigration is an important part of United States’ history. Between the years of 1870 and 1910, more than 20 million individuals migrated to the nation. As the years progressed, many of the American natives began to treat migrants unfairly. The group of migrants that I have chosen to focus on is the Chinese. Many Chinese migrants dwelled together in Los Angeles’s Chinatown.…
Between 1620 and 1645, the “great migration” occurred. It was known to be the largest migration for the English with over 45,000 people coming over to the 13 colonies (Alchin, n.d.-b). By the end of the 1600’s there was a rough estimate of 200,000 settled into the colonies. The northeastern part of the new world was the most populated (Springston, 2013). However, that number did not include the other two migrated groups: the Spanish and French.…
In 2007, I was hired by Irving Police department and completed the academy as the valedictorian. I’m currently assigned to patrol and still enjoy it as if it was the first day. The work is challenging and for the most part each call is like a new adventure. The work that intrigues me the most and I truly enjoy is narcotics interdiction.…
After my long and tiresome journey to my long awaited paradise of America, I anticipated following the gold rush and providing for my family back in China. I hoped to find a better life in America. I ending up at the distant land of Angel Island or so I have been told of various other immigrants. As I arrived I was excited to advance from this point and adventure into the land called America, but I was told that I would not be allowed to enter. Due to the Chinese exclusion laws I am told that I cannot enter America.…
