Have you ever heard of the wildly dangerous Komodo dragon? The one whose bite contains so much nasty bacteria, that it kills large animals like water buffalo and deer. If not, it’s time that you did because there is a lot more than the Komodo Dragons bite to learn. For starters, the Komodo Dragons mouth isn’t full of bacteria. That is just a myth! It actually produces venom, like a poisonous snake. And, even though these reptiles are quite large, some growing up to 12 feet, they are actually in a dangerous place as far as a species. Scientists estimate that there are only roughly around 5000 Komodo left. Their size is a good physical feature to take down water buffalo, but it’s also a curse because it is the leading reason for their dwindling numbers. There are two main reasons for this, hunting and habitat destruction. The Komodo dragon is an apex predator in its environment, meaning that in its environment the Komodo dragon is the top of the food chain. There are no other animals that predate it. Removing an apex predator from an environment causes effects all the way down the food chain.
The Komodo dragon hunts deer and water buffalo as well as other animals. If the Komodo dragon goes extinct the deer population can and will grow unchecked eventually leading to the decline of their habitat. The more deer and herbivore animals there are the more animals to eat plants that don’t regrow faster than the deer population does. The deer eat through their habitat, and they themselves eventually die off.
The hunting of the Komodo dragon for its skin and the destruction of the Komodo dragon’s natural habitat needs to stop. Government agencies need to step in and put laws in place to protect this species, big fines and punishment for poaching should be introduced.
