Kolbe and the other monks and priests in the monastery provided comfort and sustenance for thousands of jews and other refugees. During the Nazi’s occupation Kolbe was given authorization from the church to keep protecting the jews and publicly attacking the Nazi’s. Because of his opposition Kolbe’s monastery was shut down and seized by the Nazis, the oppressors also sent to the death camp Auschwitz for his religious based treachery. By defending the men, women, and children being attacked by the Nazis, Kolbe demonstrated moral courage by defending others.
At Auschwitz Kolbe was given the same treatment as the Jews that the Nazis were used to maiming and killing. Kolbe went through hours of beatings and food deprivation, but he never showed his suffering. Kolbe said the reason he never showed his suffering is that he was not being punished, he had done the right thing and he knew that it was better that he helped people instead of fleeing.
