Kolb Learning Style Inventory Essay

The Kolb Learning Styles Inventory is something new to me. I have never seen anything like this until I took this class. When they had us take the test to find out our learning patterns, I was excited to learn what my patterns consisted of. When first reading my results, I was stunned at how on point I felt it analyzed me. As I continued to review my inventory I found parts that I disagree with.

The cycle portrayed me as the type of leaner that is in the middle. When it comes to how I take in experiences. I scored higher than 7% of the normal population as to who uses concrete experience in my learning, in viewing my learning process percentile for the reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. Kolb’s experiential learning theory has been widely influential in adult learning. The theory and associated instruments continue to be criticized, but rarely is the graphical model itself examined. This is significant because models can aid scientific understanding and progress, as well as theory development and research. Applying accepted modelling and categorization criteria to Kolb’s basic model reveals fundamental graphic syntax errors, a failure to meet modellers’ graphic sufficiency and simplification tests, categorization and definitional problems relating to learning activities and typologies, misconstrued bi-polarities and flawed logic.…

My reflection focuses on the role I took as an ODP student at the pre-operative checks on admission unit, anaesthetic and surgery in the general theatre. For purposes of completing this assignment, I will refer to the patient that journeyed to the theatre for lobectomy thorascospic (a surgical procedureto remove one of the lobes of the lungs to check for any disease) operations as Mrs. A for the purpose of confidentiality. The reflection is presented based on Gibb 's Reflective Cycle (Gibbs, 1988). The reflective cycle comprises of five stages and these include the description, the feelings, the evaluation, conclusions, and the action.…

After performing the Bixler Learning Style Inventory, it was determined that I am an auditory learner. This finding is not shockingly surprising. I enjoy a good conversation, with an attentive ear, of course. I love listening to music and listening to others talk. I possess an outgoing personality to start and maintain a decent conversation.…

By competing the Honey and Mumford learning style questionnaire (2006), I have been able to understand a reflector is my dominant style of learning and activists to be my weakest style of learning. As a reflector, my learning normally begins at reflective observation stage (Fee, 2011). Fleming (2011) states that I observe, gather and evaluate information from a range of perspectives before acting. This learning style enables me to capitalise on reflective learning; through the evaluation of my work activities, I can identify which areas need to be improved as far as my clinical knowledge and skills are concerned. Moreover, this style supports collaborative learning and critical debate skills which are essential for palliative care practice…

Learning styles and intelligence At the end of third week, I continue to expand my horizon about human behavior. Even though, we humans are very similar to each other, it is eye-opening to find out, how different we are when it comes to learning styles. We each is gifted with unique characteristics and talents. I find studies mentioned in “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids" “very helpful. I am fortunate that I am learning about learning styles and intelligence at the right time.…

In addition, I realized that I need to be able to make logical connections in order to learn in a way that promotes real understanding and long term memory. Furthermore, I discovered that setting goals and creating a plan that incorporates a checklist is profitable for me. When comparing the computer assessment and the self-assessment, the results were somewhat similar but after much self-examination and reflection, I believe the self-assessment is a more accurate representation of my working and learning styles. I believe that I strongly exhibit several of the traits in the excite dynamic group that I feel would classify me as deliberate rather than stress…

Theory is Everywhere: Kolb’s Theory of Experiential Learning “College is hard, but dental school will break you”, is the first statement I heard from a 4th year student when I first started working with students as the graduate assistant for the Office of Student Affairs, within the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. I was shocked and confused by this statement because standing before me was a student who had graduated with a 3.95 grade point average in their undergraduate study and was in the top of their class in dental school. I asked them to clarify and they responded by explaining that the first two years are all bookwork with a few practical skills and the last two years are all practical work with little bookwork. They told me…

My finding from the self-assessment comes as no surprise. I have a kinesthetic learning style, but both visual and auditory styles are close behind, I have become flexible in learning styles, depending on the subject I am studying will determine the type of style works best to obtain the most of the information, for example, I will gain more on new work instruction at work by practicing the process several times before I am comfortable; although, when learning stories from the bible, I pick up more by discussing the topic with other church members during bible study. I am a visual learner for standardized information, I absorb best by reading the information. My temperament is a director, again, this comes at no surprise. I am a result-driven…

Learning is multidimensional. Very seldom will a learner use just one type of learning style. There are four different learning styles: Visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic and multimodal. Multimodal is a combination of two or more of the learning styles. Those who are multimodal in their preferences can be more flexible about how they take in and give out information than those with a VARK profile that emphasizes a single preference.…

It may seem at first that there is a clear tension between the educational aims of a clinic and the legal service needs of clients. In fact, the York law School Clinic Handbook seems to make this friction clear in stating that students have to allow their professional obligations to the client to take precedence over the intended educational outcomes of the module. Nevertheless, I feel that my time in clinic has shown that the tension between these two aspects is entirely superficial. Students may have an overriding duty to their clients but at the International Clinical Education Conference in 2005, Law School representatives stated that a clinic 'must be sustainable both educationally and professionally '.…

When I first began this class I thought that this would be just another introductory class that is required to orient you to the expectations of the particular college. Now, after completing this class, I know that this is not the case. Personal Dimensions of Learning has been a great help, not only to my school work, but also in my daily life. Before taking this class, I thought that learning, and completing daily tasks, were mostly memorizing the order of the way things are supposed to be done and just completing the task. I never liked this strategy, but it always seemed to be the most convenient way to get things done at school, home, and work.…
