Knowledge vs. Experience, in Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” we follow a mother’s brief encounter with her educated daughter that claims to understand her culture more as tension and conflict begins to rise between the two. Despite Mama’s daughter, Dee coming back to the country with an education that has given her a social awakening of sorts, the audience is almost compelled to adopt and take on the mother’s perspective in the narrative. There are several factors that create this bias, but one of the most critical reasons for this is because of the way Alice Walker characterizes the two contrasting characters.
