Knowledge Skills Competencies Assignment

The first artifact I have chosen to illustrate effective written communication is my completed portfolio that was completed for my fall semester 2015, PRST 3010 class. The PRST 3010 class, had me look at my work history and extra-curricular activities, and then weigh those against certain criteria, to see if they were worthy of college level learning and credit. Fortunately, my completed portfolio was worth twenty four college credits, so it was definitely a worthwhile endeavor.

I would consider this artifact an example of my best work for many reasons. First, it had me view my life (work history, extra-curricular activities, skills I use every day etc.), from an angle that I had never considered.

Response to “The Transaction” by William Zinsser “The Transaction.” Upon reading its title, I would not have expected William Zinsser’s work to concern writing; monetary or some similar business exchange is what I had anticipated. However, the nature of an exchange is present, though, in the form of information: the exchanging of different ideas (“…he was interested in my answers…I was interested in his answers).” With this, textual evidence supports that Zinsser uses the context of a transaction in order to easily apply a comparison and contrast technique. Moreover, the technique itself provides a prime illustration of how variable writing can be, thus, proving to reflect one’s variable emotions.…

This week in the field was slower than usual. Many of the tasks completed this week have been performed multiple times throughout my time with Vital Connections. One of the tasks completed this week was filing paperwork for student folders. This was a task where I went through the folders of students who attend Vital Connections and search for any missing information. Information such as health records, parent information, and child information etc.…

This artifact shows my personal responsibility to my Girls Cross Country team in 2014. This was one of the biggest steps I took within my four years of high school. Joining the Cross Country team came with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears; but I must say this sport not only showed me how to push myself physically and mentally but it also showed me what it means to have a team; a…

This week in field was not too busy, but was busy enough to allow me to experience and complete new tasks. Although the tasks completed this week were not very challenging, they allowed me to come in contact with some of the competency skills. Competency skill 9 was re-introduced from last week. I was to report to the Arthurtown site and intern under the supervision of Ms. Julia. Ms. Julia had me continue to sort through employee files; looking for forms any of the teachers may have been missing or needed to update.…

Goal #3: Learn how to be more decisive in decision-making situations As a people pleaser, I have difficulty making decisions because I want to make sure everyone’s opinions and ideas are valued. However, this often leads to internal conflict because I take too long to make decisions, out of fear that I am making the wrong decision, hurting other peoples’ feelings or being overly assertive. I find that I seek approval from others in order to validate my opinions in decision-making situations. Being more decisive will help me become a more confident and purpose-driven leader, which will demonstrate to my team members that I can lead them and that they can trust the choices I make. I will know that I have achieved this goal when others recognize my promptness in making decisions.…

In the past ten weeks, I have become both a more independent writer and a more independent person. I managed to hunt for apartments and sign a lease for the first time, apply for my first job, go on my first interview, and get hired all while managing my academics and social life. My growth as a writer and as a person have come hand in hand this quarter. Neither one a product of the other, but both mutually influential.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

The Saint Mary’s seminar classes are so unlike traditional teacher-centered learning. The Western Tradition II focuses on three learning goals; shared inquiry, critical thinking, and written and oral communication. These three learning goals really help students explore the Western Tradition by examine the themes written by the authors we discussed. De Las Casas, Rene Descartes, and Voltaire really influenced the way I thought about how our culture started and the major flaws we stay face today within our society. If everyone read and discussed the themes that these authors purposefully wrote in their text maybe people would have realized the underlying issues that have been around for forever have solutions.…
