Knowledge Management (KM) is for managing knowledge in organizations, supporting capture storage, creation, and dissemination of information. The idea of a KM is to enable personnel to have a ready access to the organization’s documented base of facts, sources of information and solution. Successful companies are able to secure, codify, and transfer knowledge more effectively and with greater speed than the competition. KM is the name given to the set of systematic actions that an organization can take to gain the greatest value from the knowledge available to it.

Of course, knowledge is still critical for successful and sustainable development initiatives, nevertheless the way knowledge is collected, organized, communicated and shared needs to be considerably rethought. Knowledge is not the same as information; similarly, to inform does not carry the same meaning as to communicate. We live in the age of information, but there is slight doubt that the information at our disposal in most cases far exceeds the amount of information we are capable to access, process, maintain and use. That is why knowledge management (KM) should no longer single-mindedness on the collection and dissemination of knowledge products, but rather on the packaging and marketing of the products. An interview was conducted with the III Corps knowledge management officer, end users and system managers to gain insight into III Corps knowledge management strengths and weaknesses and its impact on mission command. Some of the key topics discussed were the current tools and processes used to facilitate knowledge management, the shortcomings and benefits of the systems, and the level of proficiency for the personnel responsible for using and managing the …show more content…
According with the interview conducted with the III Corps knowledge management officer, the unit has the required tools, processes and resources available to support knowledge management. The identified shortcomings are not an issue for III Corps leadership since there is training available to mitigate the loss of a knowledge management representative. Having a standard tools Army wide allows personnel to connect worldwide and share knowledge. Maybe in the future the Armed Forces shares the same standards of knowledge management systems within all the services and communication will be better.
