Knowledge In Lord Of The Flies

Throughout the centuries knowledge can be in various ways be claimed to be the key component to developing a strong civilized society. This can be demonstrated in the novel Lord of the Flies, throughout the novel, this certain concept of knowledge is present, especially when the group of boys decide to use perhaps one of the most symbolic objects in the book, the specs that belonged to Piggy to create a fire that was used to signal any kind of ship or plane. “‘Piggy! Have you got any matches?’ … ‘His specs-use them as burning glasses’” (36). The glasses which represented a form of intelligence was used to the benefit of these boys, since the glasses had been used in a heroic way it can somewhat help interpret intelligence, despite its destruction …show more content…
Throughout the novel, Jack and Ralph had their constant bickering about their position in the group of kids. Jack and Ralph both had a different aspect about the way to run their little society that was formed, which led to many conflicts when Ralph finally decided to act and think for himself. Once Jack finally realized Ralph had began to act on his own he took this as an opportunity to detach from the rest. “‘Who’s going to join my tribe?’...’I gave you food,’ said Jack,’and my hunters will protect you from the beast. Who will join my tribe?’” (139). Jack stated his separation from the original group with confidence to show them that he would be fine on his own and could become a better leader for everyone who decided to follow him. His assurance of everything soon was able to attract many followers, especially the littluns, the youngest and the far most gullible of them all. But overall practically everyone in the group except the twins and Piggy were drafted to Jack's new tribe, however one must not be over overconfident, thus it will reveal your true identity. This being if you have bad intentions which will start to be seen in the eyes of your people . Viewing this novel in the perspective of historical events, Jack can be viewed to be a replica of Napoleon with the exception of Jack being an inferior individual who …show more content…
For instance, Jack in the novel had decided to split apart from the group of boys and created his own ‘tribe’ as they had called it. With there only being two groups of kids the other remaining boys had to choose rather they stay with Ralph or join Jack,”‘I’m chief,’ said Ralph, ‘because you chose me And we’re going to keep the fire going… I said you were hunters. Thats your job.’ ‘Who’ll join my tribe and have fun?’ (139),” Jack tries to bribe the kids and have them join his side. Jack can resemble Bonaparte in this aspect due to the fact that he crowned himself instead of having the Pope crown him like most emperors had done in the past centuries,”After seizing political power in France in a 1799 coup d’état, he crowned himself emperor in 1804.” The people were so amazed by this man that they elected him to become the leader of all of France. Bonaparte later demonstrated his large amount of power by crowning himself proving how much power he had over France and all of Europe during his rule. The European people took into consideration all the power Napoleon had reveled with the conquering of all the countries that surrounded France. Napoleon surely with time was able to take advantage of the power that had been given to him by installing his relatives as the rulers of the neighboring countries he had conquered, “Napoleon first installed his brothers as the newest rulers in

Not since Julius Caesar and his expansive Roman Empire had there been a leader so pervasive or impressing as Napoleon Bonaparte. Born on the previously Italian, then French island of Corsica in 1769 and raised by the middling yet technically noble Buonaparté family, Napoleon would, by the end of his life, come to rule France as its First Consul and, later, constitutional emperor for a total of fifteen war-filled years. By age 20, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in France’s 1st Artillery Regiment. By age 24, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. By age 30, he had bloodlessly overthrown the struggling post-Revolutionary French government to sit as its Consulate’s head.…

Ralph’s faction is made up of the boys who are still hanging to the rules, and who still have some morals, while Jack’s group is made up of those who would rather hunt than work to be rescued. This shows how they stopped cooperating and working to keep each other in check. If broken down to a psychological view, Jack is the id, Ralph is the ego, and Piggy is the superego, which all keep each other in check. During the split, Jack, the primitive and instinctual one, gets away from Piggy, the morally correct and rule-oriented one, who would generally cancel Jack’s personality out. Now that they’re apart from each other, though, Jack takes that newly found freedom of him being in charge, and makes very primordial choices.…

A main character, even a king, or leader has to make all of the decisions and at times, does not make the right decision. However, they can signify power and show great traits of leadership just like Ralph from Lord of the Flies, Oedipus from Oedipus the King, and Othello.
