In 2003, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social work. Since then I
have had experience working for nonprofits. As I started out my career I have
worked for nonprofits in the area of mental health, homelessness, and adoption.
This has allowed me to gain knowledge of how they operate. I have had experience
working with board members, fund raising, and general operations. I have also
gained insight to some of the advantages and the struggles nonprofits face. I currently
work for a government agency. However, since I am still in the field of social worker,
I work with providers that are non-profit.

The process objectives or steps for each of the five course objectives listed above
are the following: 1) complete group project 2) read information assigned throughout the
textbook 3) take notes 4) complete interview assignment and ask about obstacles
managers face in nonprofits and the skills needed to manage a nonprofit 5) practice skills
learn at work.
Critical Reflection
The foreword by Groban, stood out to me. Since my background is in social work and business the topic and history of nonprofits are an value to me. The author writes “Historically, the primary distinguishing characteristic of nonprofit sector is that it is mission-and value –driven. Nonprofit organizations exist to accomplish some social good, however that may be defined (page 16). This is especially true in the areas I have worked with nonprofits. My experience has been with companies that are seeking to make a change in society or help with a particular need. The reading also discussed how nonprofits vary in size and income.
