“So called worldly things”
In “Knowing Our Place,” Barbara Kingsolver, a highly respected bestselling novelist, conveys her opinion on the environment. She begins by mentioning a log cabin that her and her family live in during the summer, located in southern Appalachia. Where there was once an extraordinary amount of American chestnut trees, until they were infected with mold and disease, causing most of them to die off. She then proceeds to talk about how much she loves being out in the cabin away from society. She also doesn’t talk about the drawbacks living in nature has. Our society has progressed tremendously due to urbanization. Improved living conditions and stable food outlets have increased average life span. If people get sick or injured there are hospitals that have been built to treat them more efficiently. If a person breaks a bone in the middle of the woods, it is unlikely that they will be able to treat that injury properly, due to lack of medical equipment. Because of urbanization, there are public and private schools, where people can get a formal education. In a modern city atmosphere, people don’t have to worry about being attacked by a predator. Urbanization has made the world a safer place at the cost of the environment. Kingsolver says, “with all due respect for the wondrous ways people have invented to amuse themselves and one another on paved surfaces, I find that this exodus from the land makes me unspeakably sad.” (Kingsolver 945) her word choice makes her seem condescending and is hypocritical because she only spends 2 months on the year in the wild. regardless of whether or not she enjoys living in the city, Kingsolver knows it is necessary to go back, she can’t just spend all year in the cabin. Her argument is also weakened because of how one-sided it is, it would have been stronger if she would have listed some benefits of urbanization and then talking about how there are outweighed by the benefits of living a simplistic life in
