I am from euphoria,
A city enclosed by beautiful peaked mountains,
Adventures leading to remarkable destinations. Barbara Kingsolver, the author of the essay "Knowing Our Place", once said, “Our greatest and smallest explanations for ourselves grow from place” (40). This “place” that Barbara is talking about can vary from person to person. It can be as unique as a red barn roof top or as generic as a shadowed bedroom. Everyone has a place like this in mind and it may even change often. Places are special and important to have and can give people many different emotions. Instead of being brainwashed by such electronics, we have family storytime, lawn and water activities and clean up races. Some of the best memories from my summer are from this place because I have never felt so comfortable and open to be with somebody else’s family. I grew up in a home that did not value family time, so when I met my boyfriend and his family they brought me in as one of their own, and that is when I had a sudden realization; family doesn’t always have to be blood related, family is a group of people who love and support you and make time for you. Every night there was a group of us cousins ranging from ages fifteen to thirty-five, we would gather and start socializing around the card table under the ugly amber brown pavilion that shadowed the water’s edge in the backyard. We were all split up into different conversations at first, and somehow at the end it always ended up shifting to a story circle where everyone went around sharing something. Growing up I had never known what it was like to share such personal stories with a family member or getting to know another individual so well, so this was eye opening for me and made me realize how amazing family could make you feel. This place gave me a sense of satisfaction and belonging; they made me feel like I was more than welcome and like I had known them all
