Pete and Debbie’s personality have a tendency to clash and not mesh, causing an opening for arguments, fights, etc. Pete has a tendency to be humorous about many things including the things Debbie takes seriously and Debbie has a tendency to criticize and contempt Pete right off on the set up of a discussion. They let the four horsemen enter, flooding occurs, their repair attempts gradually stop working. The two also start living parallel lives in the sense, Pete goes off to fantasy baseball and Debbie goes off to the club to dance. It appears Pete and Debbie’s marriage involves all of the key problems Gottman points out in his book and although the movie ended with the two still happily married, Pete’s only reassurance was realizing how much Debbie loves him.
