KLGO lies on the east side of the Alexander Archipelago and on the western edge of the North American mainland. The park lies adjacent to the international border of British Columbia, Canada and is considered an international park due to the Chilkoot Trail which starts at the headwaters of the Taiya Inlet and incorporates the Canadian portion of the trail or the Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site of Canada. The two parks joined together in 1998 to create Klondike Gold Rush International Historical Park. The international border between southeast Alaska and British Columbia remains irregular due to the landscape. The international border connects between the tallest and most prominent peaks.
