Klimt The Kiss Essay

During the years 1907-1908, “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt was painted on canvas using oil and gold leaf. The current locate of the painting is Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna, Austria. In the painting a man and woman are embracing one another in an amorous way. The man seems to be initiating a kiss with the woman on the flowery cliff-like hill setting. My impression of the painting is romantic and intimate feeling when looking at the couple, and how they are exact opposite from one another. The man’s lines are straighter and bolder than the woman's light wavy ones. The main color theme in the artwork is gold which surrounded the couple like a shrouded cloak. The background is dark blackish mixed with gold leaf and the flower hill mix of bright green, blue, purple, red, and yellow. The texture of gold clothing giving a soft and smooth touch. The painting is an Art Nouveau style and given it an two dimensional flatness kind of look with the viewpoint in a one-point perspective. The artist used of gold leaf give the painting a modern flavor like today’s art. The lines are implied draws my eyes more towards the couple. Klimt shows in the painting is interpreted the dominance of men over women. See the man is more dominant and forceful of the two. While the woman looks docile and seems to be slowly struggling against the man. The artist shows the embrace of two lovers subtle but a forceful relationship. Klimt work “The Kiss” is very interesting and beautiful painting which shows the sexual tense between lovers. I really do admire Klimt because his artwork is always unique in its own way. He is still very influential in today’s art by used of his style and
